When do cactus plants bloom?

The cactus is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant that belongs to the Cactaceae family in plant taxonomy. Its stem is spherical or oval, and the globe has several vertical ribs densely covered with spines. It generally blooms in the early morning or evening, with flowers growing among the spines along the vertical ribs. The flowers are silvery white or pink and last from a few hours to one day. Let's take a look below at when cactus plants bloom!

When do cactus plants bloom?

Cactus plants generally bloom around May, and how long the blooming lasts varies by variety. Some, such as the ball cactus, may bloom for only a few hours to one day, while others, such as Yuweng and Feihuayu, can stay in bloom for about two or three days. Under normal circumstances, to see a cactus bloom, it needs to be cultivated for at least 3 to 4 years and the globe diameter must reach at least 3 to 4 cm. However, depending on the variety, the ease of blooming also differs. Generally, those in the genus Gymnocalycium, such as Feihuayu, bloom relatively easily, while the golden barrel cactus rarely blooms; it is said to take one or two decades before it will bloom.

Why doesn't a cactus bloom?

1. Not enough time: A cactus is generally cultivated for 3 to 4 years, and when the globe diameter reaches 3 to 4 cm, it should be able to bloom.

2. The plant is too small: If the cactus plant is not large enough, it will not bloom. Generally, it will only bloom at around 10 to 15 cm.

3. Poor management: If the cactus is not given sunlight during cultivation or is watered too much, it will not bloom.

4. Wrong season: Cactus plants mostly bloom in May to June. If the season is wrong, they will not bloom.

How can a cactus be made to bloom?

1. Soil: The soil used for planting cacti is best kept somewhat loose and rich in nutrients. You can buy some nutrient soil specially formulated for planting cacti. This helps the plant absorb water and air and can also encourage it to bloom earlier.

2. Light: Cacti like ample sunlight and ultraviolet rays. In seasons with little rain, try to place them outdoors as much as possible, so they can get better light and ventilation conditions. This is very helpful for the plant's vigorous growth and can also encourage it to bloom earlier.

3. Temperature: The optimal growing temperature for cacti is 20 to 30°C, and it is best if the temperature difference between day and night is somewhat large, as this benefits their growth. Be careful not to keep them in a hot, stuffy environment all summer, and in winter the temperature should not be lower than 5°C.

4. Water: From April to June, water cacti once every 1 to 2 days. In July and August, when the temperature exceeds 38°C, ventilation should be increased and watering should be controlled. In winter, if the room temperature is above 15°C, water normally; if the room temperature is 5 to 10°C, water once every half month; if it is below 5°C, do not water.

5. Fertilizing: Proper fertilizing during the growing season can promote blooming. Do not fertilize when the temperature is above 32°C or below 20°C. Fertilizers such as chicken manure, bone meal and cake fertilizer should be chosen, fully composted, diluted with water, and then poured into the pot.
