The Cultivation Value of Littleleaf Boxwood

1. Landscaping: Littleleaf boxwood is a commonly used foliage tree species. It is not only an evergreen tree species but also resistant to pollution, and it can absorb toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide from the air, purifying the atmosphere. It is especially suitable for planting as greenery along roads with high vehicle traffic.

2. Medicinal use: Littleleaf boxwood is used in folk medicine to treat cardiovascular disease, malaria, syphilis, rheumatism, dermatitis, and rabies, among others. Sitting in a basin with an infusion of this medicine has achieved relatively good results in treating early-stage syphilis, reducing vaginal inflammation, and tightening the vagina.

Propagation Methods for Littleleaf Boxwood

1. Cuttings: For littleleaf boxwood, cuttings are taken and inserted immediately in mid-April and late June. The insertion depth is 3-4 cm. Before insertion, water the bed thoroughly; after insertion, water to seal the soil. Then build an arched shed over the bed surface, watering thoroughly once every 7 days, at a temperature of 20-30°C and a relative humidity of 75-85%.

2. Sowing: Littleleaf boxwood is sown in early to mid-September. Soak the seeds in clean water for 30 hours, then evenly scatter them into the furrows. After lightly treading them down, cover with 1 cm of soil, then cover the seedbed with rice straw, and finally water thoroughly once with a watering can. After that, water thoroughly onto the rice straw 2-3 times each week until roots form.

Planting Methods for Littleleaf Boxwood

1. Soil: For littleleaf boxwood, it is suitable to choose an open area with sufficient sunlight and good soil and water-fertilizer conditions for planting. Remove weeds and gravel, apply decomposed base fertilizer, rake the ground level, and plow deeply, ensuring that the relative soil moisture content is 75-80%.

2. Planting: Planting littleleaf boxwood seedlings is mainly done in spring, generally in early April, preferably two or three days before “Qingming”. For open-field planting, the plant-to-row spacing is generally 0.5×1.5 or 0.4×1.2 m, with about 1000-1500 plants planted per mu.

3. Watering: For littleleaf boxwood, from April to June, during the period from bud break to flowering, water should be replenished in time. From June to September, spray the leaf surface as much as possible and do not allow water to accumulate. From October to November, water should be appropriately controlled. Water with winter water at the end of November, and water with green-up water in mid-March of the following year.

4. Topdressing: For littleleaf boxwood, in combination with watering, apply an additional 45 kg of diammonium phosphate and 30 kg of urea per hectare, applying the fertilizer in split doses. Urea should be stopped after July to prevent excessive vegetative growth of the seedlings, which would leave them unable to lignify in time when winter arrives and make them prone to freezing damage.

5. Weeding: For littleleaf boxwood planting, weed 4-5 times throughout the year, with the principle of completely removing weeds from the nursery land. Weeding should not damage the roots of the seedlings. Deeper weeding can raise the ground temperature and help accelerate the growth of littleleaf boxwood seedlings.

6. Pruning: Littleleaf boxwood has a very strong apical dominance. Its sprouting ability is strong, while its branching ability is relatively weak. Through appropriate shaping and pruning, an ideal main trunk and full side branches can be cultivated, making the tree body round, symmetrical, compact, and firm.

7. Overwintering: For littleleaf boxwood in some areas, due to cold winters and large day-night temperature differences, protective measures should be taken before overwintering for 2-year-old littleleaf boxwood, such as building a frame with bamboo poles and covering it with non-woven fabric before winter, and pressing down all around the bottom edge of the non-woven fabric.
