Paper mulberry seed prices and planting methods

Paper mulberry, also known as goutao tree, goru tree, chushizi, etc., is a deciduous tree plant of the genus Broussonetia in the Moraceae family. It has high cultivation value and is widely cultivated across northern and southern China. Its leaves are excellent pig feed, its bast fiber is a high-grade raw material for papermaking, its roots and seeds can both be used as medicine, and its sap can treat skin diseases. Let's take a look at paper mulberry seed prices and planting methods together!

How much do paper mulberry seeds cost per jin?

The price of paper mulberry seeds is about 60 to 100 yuan per jin, but prices vary greatly depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin, market, etc. Paper mulberry is light-loving, highly adaptable, tolerant of drought and barren soil, tolerant of smoke and dust, and strongly resistant to air pollution. In production, it is commonly propagated by seeds or cuttings. To overcome the problem of female plants' succulent fruits dropping in large quantities when ripe and affecting environmental sanitation, male plants can be used as scions to cultivate grafted seedlings for planting.

Sowing methods for paper mulberry

1. Site selection and land preparation: For paper mulberry seedling cultivation, choose a loamy soil plot sheltered from wind and facing the sun, loose and fertile, deep, and not prone to waterlogging as the nursery site. Carry out land preparation and fertilization 1 month before sowing. Along with land preparation, apply 150 kg of crushed cake fertilizer or 1000 to 1200 kg of barnyard manure per mu.

2. Sowing time: Paper mulberry is generally sown in mid to late March. Before sowing, soak the seeds in clean water for 2 to 3 hours, remove and air-dry them, then mix them evenly with fine sand at twice the volume of the seeds, pile them indoors for germination. When 30% of the seeds have split open, sowing can begin.

3. Sowing method: Paper mulberry is sown in rows. The sowing rate is about 0.15 kg per mu. Mix the seeds and fine sand evenly and scatter them into the row furrows, cover with soil just until the seeds are no longer visible, cover with grass after sowing, and when 30 to 40% of seedlings have emerged, remove the covering grass in batches in the afternoon.

Planting methods for paper mulberry

1. Planting density: Paper mulberry afforestation is not limited by conditions or topography. It can be planted in concentrated contiguous stands or in small patches, and can be planted along ditches, ponds, reservoir banks, both sides of streams, and around houses. Planting density varies according to different forest management objectives.

2. Tendering and management: Young paper mulberry forest land is prone to weeds and shrubs, which affect tree growth. To keep the forest uniform, grow robustly, and improve the yield and quality of the stand, cutting weeds and removing shrubs should be carried out 1 to 2 times per year. When necessary, intertillage, weeding, and fertilization can be carried out in the forest land.

3. Trunk cutting and renewal: After paper mulberry has been established for 2 years, cut it off from the main trunk at 30 to 50 cm to promote sprouting branches. Scattered and mature old trees should be cut back and renewed at the appropriate time to promote the growth of new branches, increase yield per unit area, and also make it easier to harvest leaves and bark.

4. Pest and disease control: The main pests and diseases of paper mulberry are sooty mold and longhorn beetles. For sooty mold, spray lime sulfur mixture once every 15 days, for 2 to 3 consecutive times. For longhorn beetles, spray with a mixture of dichlorvos and trichlorfon at 800 times dilution, or use a degreased cotton ball dipped in undiluted dichlorvos and insert it into the insect bore hole.
