Forsythia seed prices and planting methods

Forsythia, also known as Huanghuagan, Huangshoudan, etc., is a deciduous shrub plant of the genus Forsythia in the Oleaceae family. It grows in hillside thickets, under forests or in grass, or in valleys and sparse forests in mountain gullies. It is cultivated in all parts of China except the South China region, and is often used as an ornamental plant and oil plant. Let's take a look at forsythia seed prices and planting methods below!

How much is forsythia seed per jin?

The price of forsythia seeds is about 50 to 60 yuan per jin, but the price varies depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin, etc. Forsythia likes light, has a certain degree of shade tolerance, likes warm and humid climates, is also very cold-resistant, tolerant of drought and barren soil, afraid of waterlogging, and is not choosy about soil. It can grow normally in neutral, slightly acidic or alkaline soil. It can be propagated by seeds, cuttings, layering, division and other methods, but in production, seed and cutting propagation are the main methods.

Sowing methods for forsythia

1. Sowing time: Forsythia seeds are suitable for germination at relatively high temperatures. According to seed storage and germination conditions, the cultivation time can be arranged in spring or winter. Spring sowing is in early to mid-April, and winter sowing is carried out before the soil freezes.

2. Seed treatment: First soak forsythia seeds in warm water at 40°C, then mix with wet sand to promote germination, turning them over frequently and replenishing water. When some seeds split open, they can be sown. Alternatively, after soaking in warm water, soak again in clean water for 24 to 48 hours, and sow after the seeds have fully absorbed water.

3. Post-sowing management: After sowing forsythia seeds, cover with soil thinly, generally about 1 cm, and cover with grass. Seedlings are afraid of waterlogging. After emergence, gradually remove the covering grass. When the seedlings are 3 to 5 cm tall, thin and finalize the seedlings. In the same year, the seedlings can reach about 50 cm in height.

Planting methods for forsythia

1. Site selection and land preparation: For forsythia planting, choose mountain land or gentle slope land with thicker soil, fertile and loose texture, good drainage, and shelter from wind and facing the sun for block cultivation, so as to facilitate cross-pollination between different plants and improve the fruiting rate of forsythia. Generally, pits are dug for planting.

2. Fertilization and planting: Before planting forsythia, apply fertilizer in the pits first. Apply decomposed barnyard manure or farmyard manure and an appropriate amount of compound fertilizer in each pit. When planting, make the seedling root system spread out, firm the soil layer by layer, and cover the planting point with soil higher than the pit surface, so as to avoid the pit soil sinking after rain, which is unfavorable for survival and growth.

3. Cultivation and weeding: During the seedling stage of forsythia, loosen the soil and weed frequently. After planting, carry out cultivation and weeding once each winter beside the forsythia trees. Weeds around the plants can be cut off or pulled out by hand.

4. Reasonable fertilization: After forsythia is planted, apply decomposed barnyard manure, cake fertilizer or farmyard manure each winter along with loosening the soil and weeding. The amount is 2 kg per young tree and 10 kg per fruiting tree. Before flowering in spring, fertilization can be increased once, and fertilizer should also be applied once after pruning.

5. Drainage and irrigation management: Forsythia likes moisture and is afraid of waterlogging, so during planting, attention should be paid to maintaining soil moisture. During dry periods, irrigate in furrows or water in time. During the rainy season, open ditches for drainage to avoid root rot caused by water accumulation.

6. Shaping and pruning: When young forsythia trees reach about 1 m in height, after leaf fall in winter, cut off the top shoot on the main trunk at 70 to 80 cm above the ground. Then in summer, through pinching, promote more branching, and from them select 3 to 4 well-developed side branches in different directions, and cultivate them into main branches.
