Red Tip Photinia Price Guide and Planting Methods Explained

Red tip photinia is the collective name for hybrids in the genus Photinia of the rose family, also known as Flame Red, Thousand-Year Red, Red Robin, and others. It is cultivated in East China, Central South China, and Southwest China. Its new leaves are bright red in spring, turning green in summer, and displaying red through the three seasons of autumn, winter, and spring. The heavier the frost, the deeper the color, and the better the color at low temperatures. Its ornamental value is extremely high. Let us take a look together below at the price and planting methods of red tip photinia!

Propagation methods of red tip photinia
1. Cutting facilities: Red tip photinia is propagated by cuttings in a single-span greenhouse. Greenhouse film must be covered, plus a shade net. After the ground inside the greenhouse is leveled, a ground-level cutting seedbed is established. The seedbed width is about 100 cm, and 10-12 cm high boards are installed around it.
2. Site selection and fertilization: For red tip photinia, soil that is loose in texture, fertile, and slightly acidic to neutral is best, and it should have convenient irrigation and good drainage. Apply 3000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu. Plow the soil more than 25 cm deep, and apply insecticide to control underground pests.
3. Substrate disinfection: Spread a layer of fine sand at the bottom of the red tip photinia seedbed to facilitate drainage. The cutting substrate can be vermiculite plus peat, or clean yellow subsoil plus fine sand. The seedbed and substrate must be disinfected with fungicides and insecticides.
4. Cutting time: Red tip photinia is propagated by spring cuttings in early March, summer cuttings in early June, and autumn cuttings in early September. The cuttings use semi-lignified young shoots or lignified current-year branches, cut into one leaf and one bud, with a length of 3-4 cm, and the cut must be smooth.
5. Cutting treatment: The cut of red tip photinia is treated with a rooting agent to speed up rooting and increase the survival rate. The suitable cutting depth is 3 cm, and the density is 400 plants per sq m. After inserting, water thoroughly immediately, and spray the leaf surface with a mixed solution of carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl.
6. Management after cutting: After red tip photinia is cut, the seedbed must be checked frequently, and the substrate moisture content should be kept at about 60%. Shade is required from cutting until rooting and sprouting. After 15 days, some cuttings begin to root. When all cuttings have rooted and more than 50% have sprouted leaves, hardening off begins.
Planting methods of red tip photinia
1. Seedling selection: When purchasing red tip photinia seedlings, choose a supplier with a good reputation and quality after-sales service to ensure the purity of the variety and reduce production risks. Choose seedlings with high product consistency, well-developed roots, and no root damage.
2. Transplanting time: Red tip photinia is generally transplanted in spring from March to April and in autumn from October to November, and this should be decided according to local climate conditions. The planting spacing should be determined according to the time kept in the nursery and the cultivation goal.
3. Seedling transplanting: When transplanting red tip photinia seedlings, carefully remove the packaging or take off the nutrient pot to ensure the root soil ball remains intact. Dig holes at fixed points, pile fine soil at the roots, spread the roots out, press gently, and water thoroughly with settling water promptly after planting.
4. Water management: During the seedling recovery period after planting red tip photinia, special attention must be paid to water management. If there are consecutive sunny days, water once 3-4 days after transplanting, and then water about once every 10 days. If there are consecutive rainy days, drain promptly.
5. Fertilization management: Red tip photinia can be fertilized 15 days after planting. In spring, apply 5 kg of urea per mu every half month. In summer and autumn, apply 5 kg of compound fertilizer per mu every half month. In winter, apply decomposed organic fertilizer once, with an amount of 1500 kg/mu.
6. Pest and disease control: For red tip photinia gray mold, a 1000-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim can be sprayed for prevention. For leaf spot disease, a 300-400 fold dilution of 50% carbendazim or a 300-400 fold dilution of thiophanate can be used for control. For scale insects, a 200-fold dilution of dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate can be sprayed, or an 800-1000 fold dilution can be sprayed.
