Why isn't my pitcher plant growing pitchers?

Why doesn't the pitcher plant grow pitchers?

The pitcher plant (Nepenthes) is a rather special plant, and its specialness lies in a unique organ —— the pitcher. This organ can break down the nutrients inside insects and absorb them for its own use. As one of the few carnivorous plants, it is grown by quite a few people in China. But some people wonder: their pitcher plant has been grown for one or two years, so why still no pitchers? Today Qinnongwang will explain how to grow pitcher plants so that they produce pitchers.

From sowing to producing pitchers, a pitcher plant needs at least 18 months. If you haven't been growing it for 18 months yet, then it simply hasn't reached the pitcher-forming growth stage. If the time has passed and it still hasn't grown any, then you should consider the following reasons.

1. No plant of the opposite sex

Pitcher plants are dioecious plants, so two plants of different sexes are required for pollination. In the wild, male pitcher plants make up about 70%, while females make up 30%. Because pitcher plants grow in low-latitude regions, where there is no obvious distinction between the four seasons, they can bloom all year round; as long as the stem of the upper pitcher can form, flowering is possible. If a potted pitcher plant has only one plant, or several plants of the same sex, it will very likely fail to produce pitchers. Just make sure to pair a male with a female.

2. Water and fertilizer don't meet the needs for pitcher formation

If the growing environment doesn't meet the pitcher plant's needs, then it won't easily grow pitchers either. Pitcher plants like a highly humid environment with plenty of light. The growing environment must not be too dry, otherwise it will not produce pitchers. When growing it, pay attention to watering, but don't let it get so wet that root rot occurs.

Improper fertilizing can also cause pitcher plants to fail to produce pitchers. Too much fertilizer will cause the soil to become compacted, while too little fertilizer means insufficient nutrients, so no pitchers can form. When growing pitcher plants, you can apply fertilizer once every half month, but it should be a weak fertilizer.

3. Temperature too low

When growing pitcher plants, if the temperature is too low, growth will stop. The suitable growing temperature for pitcher plants is between 25℃ —— 30℃, and in winter the temperature must not fall below 16℃, otherwise the pitcher plant will begin to stop growing.

In addition, when the weather is rather hot, you need to spray water at night to cool it down, ensuring a relatively large temperature difference between day and night, which is good for the pitcher plant's growth.

4. Constantly changing its position

If you frequently change the pitcher plant's growing position, it may also fail to produce pitchers. So don't constantly change the environment for your pitcher plant. Even if your current environment isn't very ideal, just patiently wait for it to adapt to its surroundings, and it will still keep producing pitchers.

The above is Qinnongwang's summary of the reasons why pitcher plants don't grow pitchers. Pitcher plants like hot, humid environments and are quite suitable for growing in southern China. If the growing environment is suitable, pitcher plants can grow very large, so when planting, it's best to first choose a suitable spot for it to grow, and after that don't casually change its growing environment.
