What to Do About Root Rot in Phalaenopsis Orchids

The Phalaenopsis orchid is a member of the Orchidaceae family, but it does not belong to the "Chinese orchids"; it is a species native to tropical rainforest regions. The Phalaenopsis blooms beautifully and is known as the "Queen of Orchids", which is why it is so loved by flower enthusiasts. It would truly be a shame for such a beautiful flower to be ruined by root rot, yet root rot is a problem that many novice growers encounter frequently. If handled poorly, the plant can only be thrown away, but in fact root rot can be treated. Below, Qinnong Web introduces how to rescue a Phalaenopsis orchid.

I. Causes of Root Rot in Phalaenopsis Orchids

There are many causes of root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids, but most are caused by inadequate care on the part of the grower. Qinnong Web has briefly summarized them below:

1. First, it is caused by poor aeration of the growing medium and overwatering. If a medium with poor aeration and poor drainage is used for growing, once too much water is applied, waterlogging easily forms, which is equivalent to the roots being directly soaked in water, causing the roots to swell and rot;

2. Second is the influence of temperature. The Phalaenopsis originally grows in tropical rainforests and is not cold-tolerant. Its most suitable growing temperature is between 15°C and 20°C, and the wintering temperature in winter must not be lower than 5°C. If the temperature is too low and no warming measures are taken, the roots of the Phalaenopsis will grow poorly, which will also lead to root rot;

3. The last point is also an unavoidable one, namely erosion by pathogens. The Phalaenopsis, which grows in tropical rainforests, prefers high-temperature and high-humidity environments, but if the temperature and humidity of the environment are very high, pathogens easily breed. Combined with the application of fertilizer, this provides an even better growing environment for pathogens, and root rot will also occur when the plant is attacked by pathogens.

II. How to Rescue a Phalaenopsis with Root Rot

1. First, dig the potting soil out of the flower pot and break it up, wash the roots of the plant clean with water, then cut off all the rotten roots, while retaining as much of the healthy parts as possible, since damaged roots also have a chance of being revived.

2. Soak the cut surfaces and the retained damaged roots in a 2 percent concentration potassium permanganate solution for about 10 minutes, then let them dry. Next, carefully apply a layer of plant ash to the cut surfaces, and the plant can be repotted.

3. The potting soil must be disinfected. A simple method is to pour boiling water thoroughly through the potting soil and reuse it after it cools. When repotting, pat the root crown area firm, water thoroughly, place it in a shaded spot, cover it with a layer of plastic film, and cultivate it at a temperature of around 20°C. After about 20 days, new roots will grow.

III. How to Prevent Root Rot in Phalaenopsis Orchids

Now that you know the causes of root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids and the remedies, is there a way to prevent it? Below, Qinnong Web introduces the prevention methods.

1. Strictly Select the Growing Medium

First, be strict when choosing the growing medium. Make sure the soil used for planting Phalaenopsis is loose and breathable. Qinnong Web recommends peat mixed with perlite or peat mixed with pine needles. Of course, you can also choose your own combination freely, but strong breathability must be ensured so that normal watering will not cause waterlogging.

2. Water Reasonably

Once the soil is chosen, you must reasonably control the watering method. Overwatering is the main cause of root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids, and also the primary cause of root rot in most plants. Therefore, you must learn to water reasonably. Qinnong Web recommends using the "water when dry, stop when wet" watering method, and strictly avoid waterlogging.

The above is Qinnong Web's introduction to the causes and treatment methods of root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids. We hope it will be helpful to everyone. Qinnong Web has also prepared many introductions on how to grow Phalaenopsis orchids for everyone to refer to as well. With the correct growing methods, we believe diseases will not easily occur.
