Five key points for correctly choosing compound fertilizer

Choose a suitable compound fertilizer according to local soil characteristics. For farmers in the alkaline soils of the north, an acidic compound fertilizer should generally be chosen; conversely, for farmers in the acidic soils of the south, an alkaline compound fertilizer should be chosen; for soils with low organic matter content, organic compound fertilizer or organic-inorganic compound fertilizer can generally be applied as an additional treatment.

Choose compound fertilizer according to the crop variety being grown. For field crops, a three-element compound fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium should generally be chosen; for economic crops such as vegetables and fruit trees, especially root crops, which need more potassium, a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium three-element compound fertilizer with higher potassium content should be chosen; for chlorine-sensitive crops such as grapes, potatoes and sugar beets, compound fertilizer produced from potassium chloride and ammonium chloride with high chloride ion content should not be applied.

Choose compound fertilizer according to the nature of the fertilizer. Normally, you should learn and understand a little more common knowledge about fertilizers, so that you have a clear idea when choosing fertilizer. For example: the GB15063—2001 national standard stipulates that the effective nutrient content of compound fertilizer (complex fertilizer) is divided into three levels: high, medium and low: high concentration nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content ≥40%, medium concentration nitrogen phosphorus potassium content ≥30%, low concentration nitrogen phosphorus potassium content ≥25%, not including trace elements and secondary elements; water-soluble phosphorus content ≥40%, etc. Different nutrient contents mean differences in application quantity and technical requirements, and of course the price is different too.

Choose compound fertilizer according to the fertilization method. To improve the fertilizer efficiency of compound fertilizer, different dosage forms of compound fertilizer should be chosen for different fertilization methods. For example, when used as a base fertilizer, granular compound fertilizer should be chosen, or compound fertilizer containing slow and controlled release fertilizer should be chosen, as its fertilizer effect lasts long and helps improve nitrogen use efficiency. For humic acid compound fertilizer, the effect of base application is generally better than that of topdressing.

Choose compound fertilizer according to the principle of balanced fertilization. Normally, keep in touch more with agricultural technicians to understand soil characteristics and crop nutrient requirements. It is best to combine this with soil testing and formula fertilization, and according to the principle of balancing crop nutrition, make a reasonable formula based on soil test results, supplementing whatever is lacking, so as to achieve a balanced supply of crop nutrient elements. In addition, the nutrients in compound fertilizer are relatively fixed, so it must not be chosen and applied blindly, nor used as a single-element fertilizer, so as to avoid unnecessary losses and waste.
