Pilea peperomioides Introduction and FAQ

Pilea peperomioides, the name sounds quite unusual - could there really be a plant that grows mirrors? Actually, no. Pilea peperomioides is a perennial succulent herb. Its leaves are thick and fleshy, round in shape, with shield-shaped petioles, just like an ancient immortal looking into a mirror, hence the name "mirror plant." By now, aren't you curious about this plant? Let's take a look together below.

Morphological Characteristics

It is multi-clumping, with rhizomes, the entire plant hairless, stems upright and stout, unbranched, about 15cm tall, green in color, turning brown when dried out from insufficient water. Leaves grow at the top of the stem, fleshy, papery when lacking water, round in shape, petioles shield-shaped, margins slightly wavy. Flowering period is April to July, flowers small and solitary, blooming like an open umbrella; fruiting period is July to September, fruit oval-shaped, somewhat flattened, with purplish-red fine wart-like protrusions. It is found in the Yunnan and Sichuan regions, mostly growing in shaded and damp areas in forests at altitudes of 1500-3000 m, and is widely cultivated in some parks as an ornamental.

Growth Habits

It prefers shade, but also grows well in bright greenhouse environments. The suitable temperature is around 16-20°C; it is shade-tolerant and can grow normally with just a little sunlight, making it very suitable for pot cultivation at home and in offices; it is relatively cold-tolerant and can safely overwinter indoors in the south, but temperatures below minus 4°C will cause cold damage, resulting in dull leaves or even leaf drop; it prefers warm and humid environments, growing vigorously in warm climate regions and flowering and fruiting easily; it prefers fertile, loose, well-draining humus soil.

Main Values

Ornamental value: After Pilea peperomioides was introduced to Europe in the early last century, it spread rapidly across European countries, prompting many plant enthusiasts to introduce and cultivate it in large quantities.
