Pansy Cultivation Methods

Pansy, also known as butterfly flower and cat-face flower, is an annual or short-lived perennial herb of the genus Viola. Its blooms are brightly colored, mostly a mix of three colors arranged symmetrically on the petals, like a cat's face. The flowers sway in the breeze like butterflies dancing, and it is deeply loved by many people. Below, the editor will explain its cultivation methods.

Growth Habits

Before cultivating, first understand the plant's growth habits. Pansy is a common wild flower in Europe and is also the national flower of Iceland and Poland. So it is relatively cold-tolerant, prefers a cool environment with ample light, fears high temperatures, and dislikes waterlogging. In addition, pansy is suitable for open-air cultivation, whether in courtyard planting or flowerbed arrangement, but it is not for indoor cultivation.

Cultivation Methods

1. Light

Pansy has a strong demand for light. With ample light, stems and leaves grow densely and flowering time comes earlier. If light is insufficient, flowering is delayed or fewer flowers are produced, and the flower colors are also duller.

2. Temperature

The suitable growth temperature during the day is 15-25 degrees, and at night is 3-5 degrees. If the daytime temperature is above 30 degrees, flower buds will disappear and flowering will be poor. If maintained at 25 degrees for a long time, it will only flower without setting fruit, and even if it sets fruit, the seeds will develop poorly. It is cold-tolerant, and the roots can withstand a low temperature of minus 1 degree, but below minus 5 degrees, the leaves will be frostbitten.

3. Soil

It prefers fertile, loose, well-drained neutral soil, and dislikes heavily clayey soil.

4. Watering

During the seedling stage, it is better to keep it slightly dry. Seedlings have weak disease resistance, and excessive moisture makes them susceptible to disease. During the peak growing season, the pot soil needs to be kept moist to provide the water needed for growth, but it should not be too wet or waterlogged, otherwise the plant will grow poorly or even die from root rot. If it is too wet during the flowering period, stems and leaves are prone to rot, the flowering period is shortened, and the fruit-setting rate is low.

5. Fertilizing

During the growing period, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer can be applied once a month. When the temperature is relatively low, nitrogen fertilizer will cause the pansy's roots to rot, so be sure to remember this.

6. Pruning

When the pansy grows leggy, you can pinch off the growing tips, which can control the growth height, promote branching, make the plant shape more rounded, and also extend the flowering period. After the flowers fade, promptly cut off the residual branches and spent flowers, which can reduce nutrient consumption and prepare for future blooming.

The above is an introduction to pansy cultivation methods. I hope it can be helpful to you. Friends who like pansies might as well give it a try.
