The yellow calla lily is also known as the yellow arum, belonging to the genus Zantedeschia in the family Araceae.

I. Overview

The yellow calla lily is elegant and graceful, with golden spathes, emerald green leaves dotted with white spots, making it an ornamental plant outstanding in both flower and foliage. At present, besides being widely used in garden waterscape arrangements, the yellow calla lily has become an important cut flower and potted plant material.

II. Ecological Characteristics

The place of origin is unknown. It prefers a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight. It is not cold-tolerant or drought-tolerant, and slightly shade-tolerant. The optimum growth temperature is 20-25°C, and the nighttime temperature should not be lower than 16°C. When the temperature is higher than 30°C or lower than 10°C, it is forced into dormancy. In winter, it must not go below 10°C. It is suitable for fertile, well water-retaining, slightly acidic clay loam.

III. Propagation Techniques

1. Division: After flowering, when the old leaves gradually wither and new leaves grow, or when repotting in autumn, peel off the small tubers around the mother plant and pot them up by grade. Generally, they bloom 3 months after planting.

2. Sowing: Sow indoors in pots, sowing as soon as the seeds mature. The suitable germination temperature is 21-27°C, and germination occurs 15-20 days after sowing. Seedlings grown from seed take 3-4 years to bloom.

IV. Cultivation Points

For pot cultivation, use fertile garden soil or pond mud, plant 3-5 tubers in a 20-25 cm pot, keep the soil moist after planting, and fertilize twice during the growing period with decomposed cake fertilizer water or Huifriend 20-20-20 general-purpose fertilizer, and pay attention to weeding and spraying more water on the leaves. After flowering, cut off the withered and yellowed leaves. A small number of tubers can be left in the pot; if there are many, they can be dug out and stored indoors.

V. Pest and Disease Control

During dormancy or storage, the tubers are prone to rot disease. In the early stage of the disease, spray the tuber surface with a 1000-fold dilution of 200-unit agricultural streptomycin powder, and store after drying. Pests include red spider mites and thrips. When they occur, spray with a 1500-fold dilution of 0.5% abamectin emulsifiable concentrate and a 1500-fold dilution of 10% imidacloprid wettable powder respectively.
