Cherry blossoms are sun-loving flowering trees that like sunlight, tolerate cold and drought, and prefer well-drained sandy soil. They fear wind during the flowering period, so a sheltered spot should be chosen when planting; they are generally planted in mountain gullies, beside streams and in mixed forests. Cherry blossoms have a strong heliotropic tendency, so when transplanting, the original sun-facing side must still face the sun, otherwise growth will be poor and the plant may even die.

Cherry blossoms are fairly adaptable, easy to transplant and survive, and relatively simple to manage. For cherry blossoms planted in the ground, water thoroughly once each year in February to March. In autumn, dig a trench 60-90 cm from the tree roots, 30 cm deep and 20 cm wide, put in some decomposed compost, dried manure or barnyard manure, and apply a root fertilizer once.

Apart from young trees, which need appropriate pruning, large cherry blossom trees should be pruned as little as possible, hence the Japanese saying, "He who prunes cherry blossoms is a fool, and he who does not prune cherry blossoms is also a fool." Since cherry blossoms flower on the tips of the previous year's branches and on several side branches from the terminal buds, even if pruning is done, it should be carried out after flowering.

For potted cherry blossoms, do not fertilize normally; after May, some dilute liquid fertilizer may be applied. In summer, when temperatures are high, spray water on the ground around the pot and on the leaves.
