Jasmine is a perennial flowering plant in the Oleaceae family, highly adaptable, easy to manage, with a long blooming period, making it especially suitable for home growing. There are two common types: single-petaled and double-petaled. Although the single-petaled flowers are not as showy as the double-petaled ones, they have a strong fragrance and their cuttings root easily. It can bloom from June to November, and in the north it must be brought indoors to overwinter. Jasmine is a natural indoor air freshener; the essence extracted from its flowers is an important ingredient in cosmetics, and it is an essential raw material for scenting sliced tea and flower-scented tea. Its leaves can also be used as medicine, having the effects of clearing heat and releasing the exterior, and draining dampness; the roots are toxic. Its place of origin is the Central and Western Asia region, and it likes warm, humid climate conditions. Sufficient light can promote flower bud differentiation, resulting in more and earlier blooming. With insufficient light, the branches and leaves become sparse and the internodes of the branches elongate. The suitable temperature is 25-30°C, and sandy loam with good drainage and good air permeability is best. If the soil moisture is high and the soil is heavy and sticky, the roots will rot and turn black. Generally, in summer during the high-temperature peak growth season, water once every 3-5 days; in autumn and winter, water once every 7-10 days. Jasmine consumes a large amount of soil nutrients during the peak growth season, so nutrients must be replenished in time by applying decomposed organic fertilizer. For potted plants, the pot and soil should be changed every 2-3 years. It is also necessary to frequently prune and shape the plant, promptly removing old branches, rampant water sprouts and young branches, to keep the plant shape attractive.
