Compound fertilizer (mixed fertilizer) is deeply loved by farmers because it contains multiple elements. According to its total nutrient content, compound fertilizer (mixed fertilizer) can be divided into high-concentration (≥40%), medium-concentration (≥30%), and low-concentration (≥25%) compound fertilizer. Farmers have many misconceptions when buying compound fertilizer, specifically in the following aspects.
Misconception 1: Granular fertilizer is compound fertilizer. In fact, besides compound fertilizer, there are also single-element fertilizers such as large-granule urea, large-granule ammonium bicarbonate, nitrogen-containing formula fertilizer, and large-granule ammonium sulfate. When buying, you must look at the effective ingredients labeled on the packaging bag to determine.
Misconception 2: Whatever dissolves quickly is good fertilizer. Generally speaking, nitrogen fertilizer dissolves most easily, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers dissolve more slowly, compound fertilizer with good granulation hardness dissolves faster, and compound fertilizer with poor granulation hardness or in powder form dissolves slowly. What dissolves quickly generally is absorbed quickly and is also relatively easy to lose, with a short fertilizer effect. Therefore, the type of fertilizer to buy should be determined according to fertilization needs.
Misconception 3: High-concentration compound fertilizer is better than low-concentration compound fertilizer. In fact, the advantage of high-concentration compound fertilizer is that its nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content is high, so less is used. However, in high-concentration compound fertilizer, because the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content is high, the corresponding proportion of medium elements such as calcium, magnesium, and sulfur is lower. If high-concentration compound fertilizer is used for a long time, symptoms of calcium, magnesium, and sulfur deficiency will appear.
Misconception 4: White granular compound fertilizer is good fertilizer. In fact, the color of compound fertilizer (mixed fertilizer) has no necessary connection with whether the compound fertilizer is good or bad. What really needs caution is those compound fertilizers that are too white; perhaps they are only single-element fertilizer.
Misconception 5: Imported compound fertilizer is better than domestically produced compound fertilizer. Imported compound fertilizer does include good fertilizers, such as those imported from Norway and those imported from Russia, but they are expensive. If cost-effectiveness is considered, many domestically produced compound fertilizers surpass them.
