Azaleas commonly suffer from the following two diseases:
Azalea leaf spot disease
Symptoms: Mainly infects leaves. In the early stage of the disease, small reddish-brown spots appear on the leaves, gradually expanding into lesions or irregular polygonal lesions, dark brown. In the later stage, the tissue in the center of the lesions turns grayish-white. When the disease is severe, the lesions connect with each other, causing the leaves to turn yellow, wither, and fall early.
Prevention and control methods: 1. In autumn, clear away fallen leaves and dispose of them, and promptly remove diseased leaves during the growing season. 2. Planting or potted flower placement density should be appropriate to ensure the plants have ventilation and light, reduce leaf surface humidity, and in summer place potted flowers in outdoor shade sheds to reduce wounds caused by sunscald and mechanical damage. 3. Immediately after flowering, spray 65% zineb wettable powder 500-600 times dilution, or 50% carbendazim wettable powder 500-800 times dilution. Spray once every 10-14 days, spraying continuously 2-3 times.
Azalea brown spot disease
Brown spot disease is a major disease of azaleas. At the initial onset, small brown spots appear on the leaves, the spots merge with each other, gradually developing into large lesions, the lesions are irregular in shape, darker on the upper surface and lighter on the underside. In the later stage, the center of the lesions turns grayish-brown, and many black or grayish-brown spots are produced on the lesions. When severe, the branches are completely bare, and the plant becomes weak.
Prevention and control plan: In the early stage of the disease, spray 1:1:120 Bordeaux mixture, or 0.4 degree Baume lime sulfur mixture, or 65% zineb wettable powder 500 times dilution, or 25% carbendazim wettable powder 300 times dilution, spraying once every 10-14 days, for a total of 4 sprays.
