Why do camellias drop their leaves? Please explain the causes and control methods

The causes of camellia leaf drop are generally soil that is too dry or too wet, poor drainage, application of concentrated or unrotted fertilizer, pests and diseases, and so on.

Leaf drop after flowering may be caused by soil that is too dry. Because after flowering the plant needs to send out new shoots and buds and enter its growth period, if watering is insufficient or does not penetrate, leaves are easily lost. Camellias grown in pots should be given loose, fertile, well-drained acidic soil, and alkaline soil should be avoided. The size of the pot should be appropriate to the ratio of the seedling.

In daily care, the plant should be placed in a moist, ventilated spot with partial shade and partial sun. It needs more than 5 hours of light. The amount of watering should also change with growth and the seasons. Normally, keeping it generally moist is enough; during the growth period it can be slightly wetter. In the heat of summer, depending on how dry or wet the soil is, water once in the morning and once in the evening. Never water with cold water under high temperatures and blazing sun.

For camellias after the flowers fade, a nitrogen-based fertilizer should be applied promptly 1 to 2 times, about once a week, to promote the growth of branches and leaves. During the bud-developing period, apply a phosphorus-based fertilizer 1 to 2 times, about once every 10 days.

Camellias are most susceptible to scale insects and red spider mites. This is caused by leaves overlapping too densely and poor ventilation. The control measure is to remove the overly dense branches and leaves so that air can circulate. For existing pests, a small toothbrush dipped in soap powder water can be used to brush them off.
