Why do money tree leaves turn yellow? Here is an explanation of the causes.
For the reasons why money tree leaves turn yellow, you can refer to the following:
1. Low ambient temperature. If the indoor temperature where your money tree is kept stays above 15°C, the money tree stops growing when the temperature falls below 18°C. The money tree is native to tropical America and is widely distributed in Southeast Asia. It likes a warm, humid environment and requires an optimal growing temperature of 18-30°C. It is not cold-tolerant. In spring, move it outdoors around the end of the 3rd lunar month or around the beginning of May on the solar calendar. Never let the room temperature fall below 8°C, otherwise cold damage will occur: in mild cases the leaves drop, and in severe cases the plant dies.
2. Insufficient light. The money tree likes light but avoids direct sunlight. Place it indoors in a spot with diffused light for cultivation; in winter, place it indoors in a spot with better light. Starting in late April, choose a clear, warm midday, move the pot outdoors or onto a balcony to receive direct sunlight for 1-2 hours, then gradually extend the time until it is managed under full light. In an outdoor full-light environment, the leaf nodes are short, the leaves are wide, the color is deep green, the canopy is full, and the base of the stem is thickened; under weak light for a long time, the branches are thin, the leaf stalks droop, and the leaves are pale green. No matter what environment it is grown in, do not suddenly change the placement location; changing position should involve a gradual adaptation process. If the plant is suddenly moved from shade to a sunny spot, the leaves will be scorched and the edges will burn, affecting its appearance. Long-term insufficient light makes the plant prone to yellow leaves accompanied by leaf drop.
3. Too much moisture. The money tree does not have high water requirements, so do not water it too much, to prevent waterlogging in the potting soil, which causes root rot and leads to plant death. In summer, water once a day indoors; in spring and autumn, water once every 5-10 days. But this is not an absolute interval; it should be adjusted flexibly, following the principle of letting the potting soil "dry before watering and dry out between waterings." Too much moisture causes waterlogging, and the plant develops yellow leaves, root rot, and leaf drop.
4. Too much fertilizer. During the optimal growing temperature period, it grows rapidly, so fertilizer should be applied regularly to ensure lush growth. Generally, apply a light fertilizer once about every 20 days, but apply less nitrogen fertilizer to avoid excessive leggy growth. When repotting, besides replacing the new nutrient soil, also add decomposed base fertilizer so it grows strong and healthy. If too much fertilizer is applied, or if the fertilizer applied is not decomposed, it will burn the roots, causing yellow leaves and leaf drop.
5. Thick dust on the leaf surface. If the dust on the leaf surface is too thick, it not only affects the appearance but also affects the plant's respiration and photosynthesis. It seriously affects the healthy growth of the plant. The dust on the leaf surface should be rinsed or sprayed clean in time, or wiped clean with a soft cloth.
6. Pests and diseases. The money tree has strong resistance and few pests and diseases. In summer, carbendazim, tuijunte, etc. can be sprayed for prevention and control.
7. Errors during the soil-changing process. Generally speaking, when changing soil, damage as few roots as possible; the added substrate should be sterile, breathable, fertile, and slightly acidic; and the potting soil should be pressed firm with no gaps left. If gaps remain, no matter how much water is given to the plant, water deficiency will still occur, and severe yellowing of leaves with leaf drop and branch shrinkage will appear.
