Agricultural ammonium bicarbonate is readily soluble in water and has a low nitrogen content (17%), and it readily decomposes and volatilizes at room temperature. Applying ammonium bicarbonate scientifically can effectively improve its fertilizer efficiency, and correct application of ammonium bicarbonate is quite beneficial to crop growth.

Although ammonium bicarbonate readily decomposes to produce volatile ammonia, and the higher the temperature and the greater the water content, the faster the decomposition. However, ammonia vapor is readily carbonated and dissociated in the soil solution and adsorbed by soil particles and organic matter, which can prevent leaching loss.

Therefore, first of all, fertilization should target this characteristic. Whether applied dry or wet, it is best applied deep, generally 6~8 cm is suitable, and immediately after application the field should be plowed or covered with soil; if deep application is not possible, it should be combined with irrigation. When applying ammonium bicarbonate, paddy fields can maintain a water layer of 7~10 cm, and after broadcasting ammonium bicarbonate, the water should not be drained for 2~3 days, but burning of the plants must be avoided.

In addition, for dryland crops, ammonium bicarbonate should preferably be used in seasons with lower temperatures, mainly as a base fertilizer. Secondly, pressing ammonium bicarbonate into granules and applying them deep is a good method to reduce ammonia volatilization loss and to improve and prolong fertilizer efficiency. Thirdly, ammonium bicarbonate readily decomposes when it encounters alkali, so it must not be mixed with lime, plant ash or alkaline phosphate fertilizers during application, so as to avoid ammonia loss.

Finally, to improve the utilization rate of ammonium bicarbonate, it should also be used in combination with phosphorus, potassium and some trace element and secondary element fertilizers to maintain a balance of the nutrients needed by crops. When combined with superphosphate, attention should be paid to the ratio of the two, and they should be mixed and applied immediately.
