How is an osmanthus tree grafted? What grafting methods are there for osmanthus? Please help explain, netizensOsmanthus grafting has the advantages of being easy to survive, forming quickly, and blooming early. Zhongdi Web has compiled several grafting methods for osmanthus trees, listed below for netizens' reference.
First, the cultivation of the grafting rootstock:
The rootstock tree species used for grafting osmanthus include privet, fringe tree, and others. The rootstock used for grafting needs to be a 2~3-year-old sapling or a 2~3-year-old branch on a perennial tree that grows robustly, has no pest or disease damage, and has a thickness of more than 1 cm.
Selection of osmanthus scions:
Osmanthus includes varieties such as golden osmanthus, silver osmanthus, red osmanthus, and four-season osmanthus. First, choose the osmanthus variety according to your preferences, needs, and available resources, then from the selected osmanthus tree choose a 2~3-year-old branch that grows robustly, is well developed, free of pests and diseases, and of moderate size as the scion.
Osmanthus grafting steps:
1. Methods such as propping, padding, framing, hanging, and tying can be used to place the osmanthus branch selected as the scion close to the rootstock branch in the same direction. Then specifically determine the suitable grafting site for the rootstock and scion, and fix the position well.
2. Cut the interface slope at the determined grafting sites on the rootstock and scion respectively. The slope is oval in shape, with a length of 3 cm~5 cm, and the depth of the slope generally does not exceed half the thickness of the branch.
3. After the grafting and tying are completed, cut off the rootstock branch 1 cm above the interface.
4. After grafting, if branches sprout from the part below the rootstock interface, remove them promptly. 31 days~35 days after grafting, cut off the scion from below the interface and let it separate from the mother plant.
5. 3 days~5 days after cutting off the graft, if the scion's branches and leaves grow normally, it has survived; if the leaves appear wilted and curled, it has not survived, and grafting should be redone. After the graft survives, the branches grow quickly, and the tying rope can easily become embedded in the bark and affect growth, so the tying rope should be loosened promptly.
