Requirements of gardenia for its growing environment:
Gardeniais native to the Yangtze River basin in China. It likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight. It is relatively cold-tolerant, tolerant of partial shade, and afraid of waterlogging. Its sprouting ability and tillering ability are both strong, and it tolerates pruning. The suitable growing temperature is 18-30°C from March to September, and 13-18°C from September to March of the following year. In winter it can withstand low temperatures of -10°C; below -12°C, the leaves will freeze and drop off. The soil should preferably be fertile, loose, well-drained acidic soil.
Propagation methods for gardenia
Method 1, cuttings:
From February to March, cut mature branches 10-12 cm long; after insertion they can root in 20-30 days. In the plum rain season, cut tender branches 15 cm long and insert them into a sand bed; they root in 10-12 days after insertion.
Method 2, layering:
In April, choose 2-year-old branches 20 cm long, lay them buried in the soil, and keep them moist; they can root in 20-30 days. In summer, separate them from the mother plant, and replant them separately the following spring.
Planting season and key points for gardenia:
Transplanting seedlings or potting is best done in February to March or October to November; if done during the plum rain season, a soil ball is needed. During the growing period, keep the soil moist; during the flowering period and midsummer, water more. Fertilize once a month, and before flowering apply additional phosphorus and potassium fertilizer 1-2 times or use Huiyou 21-7-7 acid fertilizer.
For potted plants, water once every 7-10 days with dilute alum fertilizer water to promote deep green leaf color and larger flowers. In early spring of the following year, prune and shape the plant, and promptly cut off dead branches and leggy branches.
Gardenia'spest and disease control:
Leaf spot disease and chlorosis often occur. Spray with 70% mancozeb wettable powder at 600 times dilution. Regularly adding 0.1% ferrous sulfate solution to the water can prevent and control chlorosis. Pests include slug moths, scale insects and whiteflies; spray to kill them with 90% trichlorfon at 1000 times dilution or 80% dichlorvos at 1500 times dilution.
