How to prevent and treat root rot in orchid cultivation? Please explain the causes and methodsMain causes of orchid root rot:First, improper watering, too much rain, or an unreasonable potting soil structure with poor drainage, and sometimes pathogen invasion can also cause root rot. Root rot causes orchid leaves to turn yellow, shrivel, and drop, and sometimes even the pseudobulb rots away, or even the whole plant dies. For methods to prevent and treat orchid root rot, you can refer to the following methods:
1. Repot early:When root rot is found in an orchid, it must be repotted with new soil and growing medium. Pay attention to the quality and drainage and water-absorption performance of the medium; fired soil or dry soil, charcoal, and similar media are preferable. You can also appropriately mix and cover some coarse sand around the root and pseudobulb area, which works fairly well.
2. Control sunlight:For a period after repotting, it must not be exposed to blazing sun; place it in a shaded, well-ventilated place, but note that the wind should not be too strong, so as to avoid being affected.
3. Pay attention to the repotting and planting method:In addition to ensuring that the potting soil drains water, the medium from the lower part of the pseudobulb to just outside the root area should be firm and dense, and the pseudobulb should be planted somewhat deeper, which both protects it and prevents the pseudobulb from shaking or floating away from the soil surface. Rotten roots and shriveled, yellowing leaves should be cut off to reduce nutrient loss, so that the nutrients of the pseudobulb can be stored to maintain root development.
4. Water reasonably:In cultivation and management, strictly regulate water use. The potting soil is best kept half-moist and slightly dry; it should neither turn white and dry out nor be obviously too wet. If rainy weather occurs, move it to a place sheltered from the rain, and manage the potting soil moisture as well as possible to ensure normal root growth.
5. Fertilize moderately:After repotting, do not fertilize. Wait until sprouting, then apply a small amount of compound fertilizer; after the new shoots open their leaves, apply nitrogen fertilizer or organic fertilizers such as fish meal and bone meal. To reduce acidity and prevent rats and pests and diseases, it is best to crush soybeans, soak them in water to ferment for several months, then add clean water to dilute at about 1:20 for topdressing, and spray thiophanate-type medicines to combat bacteria and prevent disease.
