Functional fertilizers refer to fertilizers that, in addition to containing a small amount of nutrient elements to supply vegetable growth, also have other functions, such as promoting vegetable root growth, improving plant stress resistance, or enhancing vegetable disease resistance. Therefore, when vegetables show certain problems, vegetable growers often use functional fertilizers to regulate plant growth, and this often achieves good results. But when the reporter interviewed in Gucheng Subdistrict, Shouguang City, quite a few vegetable growers raised a question to the reporter: why do functional fertilizers work well the first two times, but after continuous use on their own, the effect becomes less and less obvious?
It turns out that when some vegetable growers applied functional fertilizers with irrigation water, they saw an obvious effect at the beginning of use, with the fertilizers promoting vegetable growth very well, so they thought functional fertilizers could also meet the demand of vegetables for mineral elements, and thus used functional fertilizers continuously on their own for a long time, only to find the effect becoming less and less obvious. The reason lies in this: when functional fertilizers were first used, the soil still contained more of the fertilizers applied previously, with sufficient nutrient content. Without using mineral element fertilizers for a short time, the functional fertilizers used could still promote the absorption and utilization of mineral elements by vegetables and meet the needs of vegetable growth.
However, because most functional fertilizers have low contents of mineral nutrient elements, if they are not used together with water-soluble fertilizers or compound fertilizers, the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other secondary and trace elements in the soil will become fewer and fewer, causing vegetable growth to become worse and worse. Therefore, functional fertilizers cannot be used continuously on their own.
