Seed fertilizer refers to fertilizer applied at the same time as sowing or mixed with the seeds. The main role of seed fertilizer is to meet the nutrient needs of the seedling roots, because the fertilizer is right near the seeds, and the seedling root system can quickly absorb the nutrients. Seed fertilizer has a great effect on vegetable seeds; if chosen properly, it can ensure that vegetable seeds germinate smoothly and seedlings grow vigorously, but some fertilizers are not suitable as seed fertilizer for vegetables, and attention should be paid when purchasing. The chemical fertilizers not suitable as seed fertilizer for vegetables are as follows:
1. Ammonium bicarbonate and ammonia water
Ammonium bicarbonate and ammonia water are highly volatile and easily damage seeds and seedlings.
2. Ordinary calcium superphosphate
Ordinary calcium superphosphate is unfavorable to seed germination and seedling growth, and generally should not be used as seed fertilizer.
3. Urea
Urea has a toxic effect on seeds and seedlings, affects seed germination, and should not be used as seed fertilizer.
4. Ammonium chloride and potassium chloride
After ammonium chloride and potassium chloride are applied to the soil, they produce water-soluble chlorides that burn the seeds and seedlings, so they should not be used as seed fertilizer.
5. Ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate
Fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate affect seed germination and should not be used as seed fertilizer.
6. Strongly alkaline fertilizers such as steel slag phosphate fertilizer and pit ash potassium fertilizer
Such fertilizers easily burn seedlings and should not be used as seed fertilizer.
For vegetable seed fertilizer, generally only a small amount of phosphate fertilizer or compound fertilizer needs to be applied.
