Can urea be used as a seed fertilizer? Please explain
Production practice shows that urea is not suitable as a seed fertilizer. Urea is an amide-form physiologically neutral fertilizer, containing 46.3% nitrogen, and is the inorganic chemical fertilizer with the highest fluorine content among solid nitrogen fertilizers. Urea is a white or light yellow crystalline substance, granular and easily soluble in water, suitable as a base fertilizer or top dressing, but urea generally should not be used as a seed fertilizer at sowing time. If it is applied as a seed fertilizer and the method and rate are not properly controlled, the high concentration of urea will affect seed germination and young root growth. This is because during the production and granulation process of urea, excessively high temperatures produce a small amount of biuret, which inhibits crop growth. When the biuret content exceeds 1%, it can no longer be used as a seed fertilizer or seedling fertilizer.
