In mid-to-late June, the fruits of grape, pear and other fruit trees begin to swell and are in the first rapid expansion stage. Flower buds are in the physiological differentiation stage, their root systems grow rapidly and their absorption function is active, making nutrient deficiency likely. During this critical period, timely and appropriate topdressing can supplement the nutrients needed by the tree, promote flowering and fruiting. Topdressing with a complete-element fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements and a special fertilizer for fruit trees is preferable. Radial fertilization is usually used, with the application rate accounting for 53% of the whole year, and it should be combined with irrigation topdressing as much as possible or applied promptly after rain, followed by hoeing to preserve soil moisture. At the same time, foliar spraying has a more significant effect.
Summer topdressing of fruit trees helps promote fruit expansion and flower bud differentiation. There are two topdressing methods: root application under the tree and foliar spraying.
I. Root topdressing. Summer topdressing of fruit trees should mainly use phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, combined with a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer. The topdressing amount depends on the tree species, tree age, fruit load and base fertilizer status. For young trees that have not yet entered the fruiting stage, 0.2-0.25 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied per tree. For ordinary large fruiting trees, 2.5-3 kg of superphosphate, 10-15 kg of plant ash and 2 kg of ammonium sulfate can be applied per tree. The topdressing method is to dig circular holes from the vertical line of the tree canopy to 1 m inward, with a hole spacing of 30-40 cm and a hole depth of 15-20 cm, then cover with soil after application. Orchards with the conditions should water after topdressing.
II. Foliar spraying.
Foliar spraying during the fruit expansion stage can enhance tree vigor, promote fruit expansion and improve quality. The spray concentrations are 0.2% ammonium sulfate, 0.3-0.5% urea, 0.3% potassium sulfate, 1-3% superphosphate and 0.3% monopotassium phosphate. Foliar spraying on fruit trees in mountainous areas has an even better effect.
