Tetanus easily causes lamb death, how to prevent and treat tetanus in newborn lambs

Tetanus in newborn lambs, also called umbilical wind or four-six wind, is caused by using unsterilized scissors to cut the umbilical cord or using unclean thread to tie the umbilical cord, which allows Clostridium tetani to infect the lamb through the umbilicus. Clostridium tetani is an anaerobic bacterium and exists in soil and manure. If sheep farmers do not do a good job of environmental sanitation and disinfection and sterilization in the sheep pen, and do not carefully disinfect and ligate the lamb's umbilicus during delivery, the lamb will become infected with Clostridium tetani and develop tetanus.
After the lamb is born 4 to 6 days, it has difficulty sucking, gradually develops locked jaw and cannot open its mouth, facial muscle spasms, narrowed eye slits, mouth corners pulled outward, and a spasm-like grinning expression. When the whole body spasms, the head tilts backward, the spine protrudes forward, and the body takes on an opisthotonus posture. In severe cases, the lamb's respiratory muscles and diaphragm all undergo spasms, and finally breathing becomes difficult and it dies of suffocation.

Sheep

First, kill the pathogens.Clostridium tetani is an anaerobic bacterium that hides in unclean soil and manure. Therefore, the daily environmental sanitation of the sheep shed must be done well. Every 5 to 7 days, use limewater or Lysol solution to disinfect the inside and outside of the sheep shed once. Clean the sheep manure every day, frequently replace the bedding soil, sweep often, keep the sheep shed clean and dry, and thoroughly eliminate the places where Clostridium tetani hides.

Second, disinfection and ligation of the lamb's umbilicus must be done well. After the lamb is born, immediately use a clean cloth to remove and wipe dry the mucus in the mouth, nose, and ears and all over the body. Use 3% hydrogen peroxide to clean the umbilical wound, then use sterilized scissors to cut the umbilical cord, tie it tightly with sterilized thread 5 cm from the umbilicus, and apply 5% iodine tincture.

Third, advance immunization.Newborn lambs can be injected with 1500 units of tetanus antitoxin.
