If organic fertilizers can be made on your own, that is the most cost-effective approach, but putting it into practice is not easy. Comparing the market prices of organic fertilizers, plant-based organic fertilizers with high nitrogen content, such as rapeseed meal and peanut meal, are more cost-effective. Rapeseed meal is the main organic fertilizer used in organic rice cultivation in the central region, and its ratio of nitrogen : phosphoric anhydride : potassium chloride is 5.3:2.3:1.3.
Rapeseed meal is an uncomposted organic fertilizer, so its application rate and timing require special attention. When rapeseed meal is used in rice cultivation, the recommended rate is 4,000 kg per hectare; 1/2 is used as basal fertilizer, applied about 10 days before land preparation, which not only prevents harm to rice growth from the high temperatures produced by rapeseed meal fermentation after transplanting, but also provides the nutrient elements needed for rice growth at the right time and in the right amount; 1/4 is used as topdressing, timely and appropriately supplementing the absorption of nutrients during the vegetative growth period of rice, when the root system and aboveground parts of the rice have already grown very vigorously and are not afraid of the harm from the high temperatures produced by rapeseed meal fermentation; 1/4 is used as panicle fertilizer. In general rice cultivation, panicle fertilizer is most appropriately applied when the young panicle has formed to about 0.2 cm, but because organic fertilizers need time for mineralization before they can release nutrients, it is recommended to apply it most appropriately about 8~10 days before young panicle formation in the first crop season, and about 6~8 days before young panicle formation in the second crop season.
Organic fertilizers should be avoided after the young panicle formation stage, so that during the grain filling period there is no excessive nitrogen supply, which would not only make the rice plants prone to lodging, but also increase the crude protein content in the grains, which is unfavorable for improving rice quality.
