Nitrogen fertilizer synergists are also called nitrification inhibitors; their composition is a class of organic chemical substances, and their actual nature is that of some fungicides. Mixing nitrogen fertilizer synergists with nitrogen fertilizer and applying them to farmland can reduce the losses of nitrogen fertilizer caused by denitrification, thereby improving nitrogen fertilizer efficiency.

The main principle of action of nitrogen fertilizer synergists in soil is to inhibit the process of conversion from ammonium and urea to nitrate; the degree and duration of inhibition depend on the performance of the nitrification inhibitor and external conditions. The application effect of nitrogen fertilizer synergists depends not only on the type and amount of nitrification inhibitor used, but also varies greatly with application conditions such as local climate, season, soil and farming system.

Therefore, Zhongdiwang has compiled the usage methods of three nitrogen fertilizer synergists - nitrogen-pyridine, dicyandiamide and 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate - and lists them in detail below for readers' reference.

Nitrogen-pyridine:The suitable dosage is about 1% of pure nitrogen. When its concentration in soil is 1-100 mg/L, it has an obvious inhibitory effect on soil nitrification, and the effective period is 30 days. Nitrogen-pyridine has a yield-increasing or fertilizer-saving effect on crops such as rice, corn, wheat, sorghum, cotton and rapeseed, but it has an inhibitory effect on the growth and development of legume crops.

Dicyandiamide:Under the influence of dicyandiamide, the ammonium in fertilizer can be stabilized for 6-8 weeks. Fertilizers with dicyandiamide added can be applied to most crops; nitrogen-containing fertilizers include ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate sulfate, urea and urea ammonium nitrate, etc. The suitable dosage of dicyandiamide is 5%-10% of the total nitrogen amount. Within 1 month after application, it has an obvious inhibitory effect on soil microorganisms, and it returns to normal after two and a half months. Dicyandiamide is both a synergist and a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer.

3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate: Application trials on crops such as potato and summer corn have initially achieved the effect of saving nitrogen and increasing yield.

Points to note when purchasing nitrogen fertilizer synergists:
Because there are many types of products containing nitrogen fertilizer synergists, when choosing, refer to field trial results and product quality. Also note whether they are safe for humans and livestock, non-toxic to seedlings, and have little side effect on beneficial microorganisms such as soil rhizobia. Production enterprises should truthfully indicate on the product packaging bag the type of nitrification inhibitor, the amount added, and the range of nitrogen fertilizer dosage, and must not substitute falsehood for fact.
Different types of nitrogen fertilizer synergists have different suitable addition amounts; some addition ratios are 0.25%, and some are 0.7%-1%. The effect of nitrogen fertilizer synergists varies greatly due to different application conditions in different places. For example, on irrigated farmland grain crops, most show increased yield, while the fertilizer effect on vegetable crops is uncertain, and legume crops mostly show reduced yield. For soil conditions, the application effect in paddy fields is better than in dry land.
