When is the right time to use chlorine-containing fertilizers? How should chlorine-containing fertilizers be applied? How can chlorine-containing fertilizers be used for the best effect? The following is a brief introduction from Gengzhongbang Planting Network for readers' reference.1. Avoid using them on sensitive crops and during the sensitive periods of crops
Different crops and varieties vary greatly in their sensitivity and tolerance to chlorine. Crops sensitive to chlorine are called chlorine-sensitive crops, including tobacco, tea, citrus, grapes, watermelon, potato, Chinese milk vetch, etc. Generally, chlorine-containing fertilizers are not applied to them, or the application rate is strictly controlled. Different varieties of the same crop differ in chlorine resistance; for example, among rice varieties, hybrid rice has the strongest chlorine tolerance. Conventional early rice has weaker chlorine tolerance, and the chlorine-sensitive period of the crop should be avoided.
The chlorine-sensitive period of most crops is mainly at the seedling stage, such as the 3-leaf to 5-leaf stage for rice; the 2-leaf to 5-leaf stage for wheat; and the 4-leaf to 6-leaf stage for Chinese cabbage, pak choi and rapeseed.
2. Pay attention to application methods
When using chlorine-containing fertilizers as a base fertilizer, they should be applied early, deep, and covered with soil. Generally, apply one week before sowing or transplanting, placing the fertilizer below and to the side of the seeds or seedlings, preferably 5 cm to 7 cm from the topsoil.
When used as a topdressing: apply in holes or bands, 5 cm to 10 cm away from the crop plants, and never broadcast. When the application rate is large, it can be applied as topdressing in 2 to 3 split applications. Topdressing can also be watered on after mixing with water or diluted manure and urine water.
3. Apply as much as possible in seasons and regions with relatively high rainfall
When chlorine-containing fertilizers are applied in rainy seasons or regions with relatively high precipitation, chloride ions can be leached away with water and are not likely to accumulate in the soil, thus avoiding adverse effects on crops. However, in dryland without irrigation conditions, poorly drained saline-alkali land, high-temperature and drought seasons, and water-scarce and low-rainfall areas, it is best not to use chlorine-containing fertilizers or to use less of them.
4. Apply together with decomposed organic fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer
When applying chlorine-containing fertilizers, applying them together with decomposed organic fertilizer can improve fertilizer efficiency and reduce the adverse effects of chloride ions on the soil; in soils with low available phosphorus content, chloride ions inhibit crop uptake of phosphorus. Therefore, when applying chlorine-containing fertilizers, an appropriate amount of phosphate fertilizer should be applied together.
Compound (mixed) fertilizers and formula fertilizers made from chlorine-containing fertilizers and urea, ammonium phosphate, superphosphate, calcium magnesium phosphate, etc. can not only reduce the harm of chloride ions, but also achieve a balanced fertilization effect because nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are used in combination.
