Sow mastitis: the piglets are crying from hunger, what should be done?

Sow mastitis is a disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms or mechanical trauma, physical and chemical factors and other factors, in which the sow's udder becomes red, swollen, hot and hard, accompanied by pain and reduced milk secretion. It mostly occurs during the lactation period after the sow gives birth. Therefore, clipping the piglets' teeth in the early stage and frequently wiping and disinfecting with potassium permanganate solution are very necessary. There are many causes of sow mastitis. When this disease occurs, our first task is to treat it quickly; the piglets are still waiting to be fed.

The treatment principles for sow mastitis are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and reducing swelling and dispersing nodules.

  1. Massage and cold/hot compress methods

Massaging and applying hot compresses to the sow's udder can promote blood circulation in chronic cases. The method is to use hot water at about 50°C with a towel for hot compresses, and massage the udder to promote blood circulation and speed up recovery. However, for udders that are hot, acute and painful, cold compresses must be used instead of hot compresses; otherwise it will worsen udder swelling and lead to exudation.

  2. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, clearing heat and detoxifying

Affected sows should immediately be given antibiotics for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment. Because the pathogens are complex, it is best to use broad-spectrum antibiotics. Drugs such as amoxicillin have good effects. In addition, 0.25%-0.5% procaine solution can relieve udder pain and accelerate udder metabolism.

(1) Intramuscular injection of 30 ml Houttuynia cordata injection and 3 g ampicillin sodium, intramuscularly twice a day.

(2) Fresh Viola philippica 200-300 g, fresh dandelion 200-300 g, dried garlic stems and leaves 100-150 g, fresh Zanthoxylum bungeanum leaves 100 g, decoct in water and apply as a warm compress for 30 minutes, 2-3 times a day.

(3) Fresh Viola philippica 100 g and fresh dandelion 100 g, crush and apply externally. Secure with gauze or clean cloth.

Sow mastitis will have a great impact on the sow's normal lactation, thereby causing abnormal development in piglets. In the process of preventing mastitis, by raising sows scientifically, regularly disinfecting the pig house environment and giving drug treatment, the sow's health is ensured, thereby achieving the effect of fundamentally curing sow mastitis.
