Large-scale spring floods may occur in spring 2016, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters makes an assessment
The Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters reported on the 21st that large-scale spring floods may occur in some parts of China in the spring of 2016.
The report shows that the El Nino event, which has continued since May 2014, developed from the central equatorial Pacific toward the eastern Pacific in May this year and has now reached the standard of an extremely strong El Nino event, and will continue until the spring of 2016, with its course highly similar to that of 1997/1998. According to preliminary analysis, next year's flood and drought situation will be more severe than this year's; rainfall in most areas south of the Yangtze River will be above normal in spring, and large-scale spring floods may occur; during the flood season, major floods may occur in some river basins, severe drought may occur in some places, and landfalling typhoons may be stronger and penetrate deep inland, causing serious impacts.
⟦NL> At present, a process of heavy rainfall is about to occur in some parts of the south. According to consultations by the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, under the combined influence of weak cold air and southerly warm, moist air flows, from December 21 to 24, eastern Southwest China, Jiangnan, South China and other places will experience an obvious precipitation process, with cumulative precipitation of 25 to 50 mm; precipitation will be strongest on the 22nd, with moderate to heavy rain in central and southern Jiangnan, central and eastern Guangxi, and northwestern Guangdong, and rainstorm in some areas, with rainfall reaching 50 to 70 mm.
