Yellow leaf disease is the banana disease that banana farmers fear most. Once banana yellow leaf disease occurs, it often takes up to 15 years of fallowing to resolve. So how is banana yellow leaf disease transmitted, and what causes banana yellow leaf disease?

Banana yellow leaf disease, also called Panama disease, is caused by Fusarium infection and is a soil-borne disease; after the pathogen invades the banana through the roots, it spreads through the vascular tissue toward the corm, and the vascular tissue at the infected site becomes noticeably browned, often with symptoms such as inward longitudinal splitting at the base of the pseudostem and corm rot. Leaf symptoms begin with yellowing along the margins of the older leaves, and the yellowing tends to spread upward to the new leaves; in severe cases the banana plant wilts rapidly or topples. The yellow leaf disease pathogen can spread and proliferate through rainwater, flowing irrigation water and soil movement, causing a large number of banana plants throughout the plantation to develop the disease.

Once a banana plant is infected by the pathogen, banana farmers immediately face losses from total crop failure or poor harvest, even if the plant can survive and send out a bunch. Therefore, the banana plantation area in the Gaoping region has shrunk greatly in recent years; even in Qishan, the main production area for Taiwan, China's high-quality bananas, abandoned plantations with yellow leaves everywhere can be seen in every direction, the planted area has dropped sharply, and banana collection and packing houses have been cut back or merged year by year due to insufficient supply, showing how severe the impact of yellow leaf disease is on Taiwan, China's banana industry.

Soil is an extremely complex organism, and soil microorganisms form their own ecological balance among themselves. Crops take root and grow in the soil and are naturally affected by soil microorganisms. Giving the soil a variety of decomposed organic fertilizers can attract different groups of beneficial microorganisms to coexist in balance and suppress the unchecked overgrowth and imbalance of soil pathogens. As long as soil conditions are suitable, bananas can grow.
