If prevention is neglected, flowers and ornamental plants often encounter some pest problems during cultivation. Aphids, spider mites and scale insects are the three most common pests harming flowers and ornamental plants, not only affecting their growth but also causing damage to branches, leaves and flowers. The editor will now give you a detailed introduction to the harm spider mites cause to flowers and ornamental plants and the control methods.

I. Damage Characteristics

Spider mite, also called short-whisker mite, mainly harms the leaves and flowers of ornamental plants; wild elm, bird plum, five-needle pine and others in bonsai are also susceptible to its damage. It pierces and sucks the sap from stems and leaves, reducing the moisture in the affected parts, causing them to lose green color and turn white, with dense pale small spots appearing on the leaf surface, curling and yellowing. In severe cases, the plant develops yellow leaves, scorched leaves, curled leaves, leaf drop and even death. At the same time, spider mite is also a vector of viral diseases.

II. Control Methods

1. Soak citrus peel in about 10 times its amount of water for 24 hours, filter, and spray the plants with the filtrate.

2. Take 50 g of plant ash, add 2500 g of water, stir thoroughly, soak for 48 hours, then filter, add 3 g of laundry detergent, mix well and spray, once a day for 3 consecutive days, then spray for another 3 days after a 1-week interval.

3. Place 1 lit mosquito coil in the pot of the diseased plant, then tie a plastic bag tightly around the pot, and fumigate for about 1 hour; both adults and eggs can be killed.

4. When spider mites break out in large numbers, alternately spray twice with 20% dicofol emulsifiable concentrate at 500 to 600 times dilution, or 20% methidathion emulsifiable concentrate at 2000 times dilution.

Spider Mite Control Techniques for Flowers and Ornamental Plants

Spider mite on flowers and ornamental plantsAlso called short-whisker mite, it is a pest that specifically harms the leaves and flowers of ornamental plants; wild elm, bird plum, five-needle pine and others in bonsai are also susceptible to spider mite damage.

The control methods include:

(1)、Soak citrus peel in about 10 times its amount of water for a day and a night, filter, and use it to spray the plants; it can control spider mites and aphids, and if used to water flowers, it can control nematodes in the soil.

(2)、Mix 15 g of laundry detergent, 15 ml of 20% caustic soda and 7.5 kg of water thoroughly and spray; check after one or two days: the mortality rate of adult and nymph spider mites is 94% to 98%.

(3)、Take 50 g of plant ash, add 2500 g of water, stir thoroughly, soak for two days and nights, filter, then add 3 g of laundry detergent, mix well and spray: once a day for 3 consecutive days, then spray for another 3 days after a one-week interval; it can control piercing-sucking pests such as aphids, spider mites and scale insects, and when mixed into the soil it can control maggots.

(4)、Place one lit mosquito coil in the pot of the diseased plant, then tie a plastic bag tightly around the pot; after about one hour of fumigation, both adults and eggs can be killed. This is a good method that is both economical and fast-acting.

Common Pests of Flowers and Ornamental Plants and Their Control Methods

Aphids, spider mites and scale insects are the most common pests harming flowers and ornamental plants. They can harm many kinds of flowers and ornamental plants, including woody flowering plants such as orchid tree, jasmine, Chinese rose, banana shrub and plum blossom, and herbaceous flowering plants such as chrysanthemum, geranium and calceolaria.
        I. Aphid, also called sticky worm. Control methods: (1) Take 50 g of fresh hot pepper or dried red chili, add 30-50 g of water, boil for about half an hour, and spray the affected plants with the filtrate; it has a remarkable effect. (2) Take 3-4 g of laundry detergent, add 100 g of water, stir into a solution, and spray 2-3 times in succession; the control effect reaches 100%. (3) Mix essential balm with water to make a 600-800 times dilution, and carefully spray the pests with a sprayer so that the insect bodies are covered with the solution; the kill effect on aphids and scale insects is above 95%, and it will not cause phytotoxicity to the plants. (4) Mix laundry detergent, urea and water in a ratio of 1:4:100, stir into a mixed solution, and use it to spray the plants; it achieves the dual effect of killing pests and fertilizing.
II. Spider mite. Spider mite, also called short-whisker mite, harms the leaves and flowers of ornamental plants; wild elm, bird plum, five-needle pine and others in bonsai are also susceptible to spider mite damage. Control methods: (1) Soak citrus peel in about 10 times its amount of water for 24 hours, filter, and spray the plants with the filtrate. (2) Take 50 g of plant ash, add 2500 g of water, stir thoroughly, soak for 48 hours, then filter, add 3 g of laundry detergent, mix well and spray, once a day for 3 consecutive days, then spray for another 3 days after a 1-week interval. (3) Place 1 lit mosquito coil in the pot of the diseased plant, then tie a plastic bag tightly around the pot, and fumigate for about 1 hour; both adults and eggs can be killed.
III. Scale insect. The body of the scale insect is wrapped in a layer of horny shell, so direct spraying with chemicals is difficult to effective. Control methods: (1) Mix white liquor with water in a ratio of 1:2, and when treating the pests, water the surface layer of the pot soil thoroughly. (2) Take 50 ml of edible vinegar (rice vinegar), dip a small cotton ball in the vinegar until wet, and gently wipe the stems and leaves of the affected flowers and ornamental plants with the wet cotton ball to wipe off and kill the scale insects. This method is convenient and safe, and can both achieve the purpose of pest removal and make the damaged leaves turn green again. (3) Gently wipe the diseased branches repeatedly with alcohol to remove the scale insects; even larvae invisible to the naked eye can be thoroughly killed, and in the second year few scale insect infestations are found. (4) Mix diesel oil, laundry detergent and water in a ratio of 100:6:60 to make a mother liquor; at this point the mother liquor looks like milk. After diluting with water or a 30% medicinal solution, carefully spray the scale insects on orchid tree, kumquat and sago palm; after 1 week, most of the scale insects become shriveled.
