Battambang Province and Pailin Province are Cambodia's largest longan-producing provinces, and their products account for about 80% of the national total output. Longan is the main agricultural product of Pailin Province. Data from the provincial agriculture department show that last year farmers expanded the longan planting area to 3,983.5 hectares, an increase of 24.4% compared with 3,201 hectares in 2017.

The report shows that last year the total longan output reached 3,997 tons, with a market price of 1 USD per kilogram. “Compared with other fruits, longan brings in higher income,” Sophoeun said. “This fruit is currently only temporarily exported to Thailand, while China is the final destination.”

“We get relatively high returns. The buyer is China, and the orders go through Thailand, so we have some concerns. If the border is closed, then we will face a crisis,” he said. “If we can secure a sustainable market and ensure proper irrigation for the farmland, we will make huge profits and further boost our economic growth.”

Longan farmer Sreng Sreang, who owns 7.5 hectares of land, is satisfied with the current market. He will harvest 27 tons of longan in the harvest season, compared with 18 tons last year. “Longan is more profitable than other fruits. If we use agricultural techniques properly, then we will achieve high yields and high profits,” he said. “I am satisfied with the price. It is now the dry season, and I will pay more attention to the water source issue.”

Longan is rich in nutrients, and the leaves, flowers, roots and seeds of longan can all be used as medicine. Longan has a very high sugar content and contains glucose that can be directly absorbed by the human body. It is generally believed that for people who are weak and anemic, elderly and frail, or debilitated after long illness, regularly eating some longan is very nourishing. Do you like eating longan? It is fine to enjoy it, but in moderation, otherwise it is easy to get internal heat and may also cause other harm.
