Canna lily

As a new favorite of green belts, canna lilies are very susceptible to canna wilt disease when maintenance and management are improper. If detected and treated early, the problem is not serious; but if treatment is delayed, it will not only affect the landscape value but also consume a sum of money. So what should be done when canna lilies contract canna wilt disease?

I. Symptoms

Leaves, stems and leaf sheaths can all be affected. Leaf lesions are mostly spindle-shaped, a few oval, brown, with dark brown edges in the later stage and grayish white or grayish brown centers, often with concentric rings. When humidity is high, gray mold-like growth, which is the fruiting body of the pathogen, appears on both sides of the lesions. In severe cases, the lesions merge into irregular large patches, and the leaves dry up locally or entirely. When leaf sheaths and stems are affected, the tissue at the diseased site sinks, forming long or irregular brown patches, also with gray mold layers.

II. Pathogen

Pyricularia cannaecola Hashioka, called canna-inhabiting piricularia spore, belongs to the Deuteromycotina fungi. Conidiophores mainly grow on the back side, slender, relatively straight, with a knee-like bend at the tip, olive to olive-brown, smooth surface, size 55-161 x 3-5 (μm); conidiogenous cells mostly bud, extending in a sympodial manner, with short cylindrical denticles remaining after spores detach; conidia borne singly, obpyriform, mostly with a slightly protruding hilum at the base, nearly colorless to pale olive, smooth surface, 3-celled, without constriction at the septa, size 17-29 x 6-8 (μm).

III. Transmission routes and disease conditions

The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and conidia on diseased residues. In the following spring, the conidia produced are spread by wind and rain to the host, causing initial infection and reinfection.

IV. Control methods

1. Pay attention to cleaning the field and burning diseased residues in a centralized manner.

2. At the early stage of the disease, spray 50% carbendazim wettable powder 1000x dilution or 25% benomyl emulsifiable concentrate 800x dilution.

Ginger wilt disease has a long epidemic period, usually starting in June and becoming severe during the high-temperature season from August to September. So what medicine is used for ginger wilt disease? (Ginger wilt disease pictures).

What medicine is used for ginger wilt disease?

1. Implementing a rotation system of alternating flooded and dry cultivation can effectively control the spread of ginger wilt disease among ginger seedlings. The land for planting ginger should be relatively high in terrain and a place where drainage and watering are relatively easy.

2. Increase the application amount of phosphate fertilizer and potassium fertilizer. When conditions permit, rice straw or crop stalks can be spread between rows for shading to prevent the occurrence of ginger wilt disease.

3. The most effective means is prevention and control from the root. When selecting varieties, choose some varieties with strong disease resistance according to local planting conditions.

4. During the growth period of ginger, after rainy days, drain the field in time to prevent the ginger from being flooded.

5. If diseased seedlings are found, remove them from the field in time. To prevent the spread of pathogens in the field, all seedlings within half a meter around the diseased seedling should be dug out. Spread lime on the soil, then use clean sterile material to fill the holes.

6. Chemical agents can be selected in time to control seed ginger.

How should ginger wilt disease be controlled?

During the growth of ginger, ginger wilt disease is a very common disease. Ginger wilt disease, also called ginger rot disease, is a devastating disease with widespread occurrence, strong epidemic potential and rapid transmission, and has become a key problem seriously restricting ginger production in many places. In production, it is mainly controlled effectively by adopting multiple agricultural measures in advance, supplemented by chemical control. Below, the editor shares with everyone how ginger wilt disease should be controlled.

1. Control of ginger wilt disease spread

① When diseased plants are found, pull them out in time, and also remove healthy plants within 0.5 m around the diseased plants, and dig out the pathogen-carrying soil.

② Spread slaked lime around the diseased holes for disinfection, with 1 kg per hole; or use 0.125 kg bleaching powder per hole, then fill with sterile soil.

2. Root irrigation control of ginger wilt disease

① Use 90% Jiangwenning 300x dilution; or 3% Kejunkang wettable powder 600-800x dilution; or Kangfa wettable powder 400-800 g per mu mixed with water; or 72% agricultural streptomycin soluble powder, or streptomycin sulfate 3000-4000x dilution, etc. for root irrigation.

② Use chemicals alternately, with 0.5-1.0 L of chemical solution per hole for root irrigation, once every 7-10 days, for 3-5 consecutive times.

③ Leaf blight fungicide, copper oxychloride, Bordeaux mixture, copper diammonium adipate and other chemicals can also be used for root irrigation.

3. Chemical control of ginger wilt disease

① At the early stage of the disease, use 20% leaf blight fungicide 1300x dilution; or 30% copper oxychloride 800x dilution; or 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture; or 50% copper diammonium adipate wettable powder 500x dilution for foliar spray control.

② Use chemicals alternately, with a spray amount of 75-100 L per mu, once every 5-7 days, for 2-3 consecutive sprays.
