When cultivating flowers, everyone hopes they will produce beautiful, captivating blooms, but reality often falls short of expectations. Some plants grow luxuriantly but simply refuse to flower, while others produce only small blossoms. All sorts of situations occur. So what exactly causes these ornamental flowers to fail to bloom?

Orchid (detailed description)

I. Physiological factors

Each type of plant has specific requirements for flower bud differentiation. Some plants differentiate flower buds multiple times within a year, and each new branch can differentiate flower buds, such as Gerbera, carnation, jasmine, Chinese rose, and four-season osmanthus. Some plants belong to the summer-autumn flower bud differentiation type, differentiating flower buds once during the high-temperature season of summer and autumn each year; after differentiation is complete in late autumn, they enter dormancy and bloom in early spring or between spring and summer of the following year, such as tulip, narcissus, tree peony, camellia, rhododendron, plum blossom, magnolia, and Hall crabapple. Some plants belong to the winter-spring flower bud differentiation type, differentiating flower buds once when temperatures are relatively low in winter and spring each year; the period from differentiation to flowering is short and continuous, such as primrose, pansy, and iris. Once you understand the flower bud differentiation characteristics of each flowering plant, you should meet their growth and development conditions during the differentiation period to ensure smooth differentiation, so they can produce abundant, colorful blooms.

II. Water and fertilizer factors

During the growing period of flowers, excessive water and fertilizer can easily cause excessive vegetative growth of branches and leaves, with nutrients mostly used for root, stem, and leaf growth, affecting flower bud formation and leading to no flowering or very few flowers; even if they do bloom, flowers and buds tend to drop.

If nitrogen fertilizer is applied excessively while phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are lacking, flower bud formation is also affected. Therefore, during the flower bud differentiation period, attention should be paid to applying fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium, or spraying a 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, which helps flower bud formation and bud development.

Applying fertilizer that is too concentrated during the bud development period, or watering inconsistently, can very easily cause flower and bud drop. Lack of fertilizer and water during the growing period, or poor plant growth, also easily leads to fewer flowers or poor flower quality.

III. Temperature factors

Before leaf buds transition to flower buds, flowers are very sensitive to environmental conditions. Based on the different low-temperature requirements for floral induction, they can be divided into three types:

The first is spring-type flowers, requiring a temperature of 5°C to 12°C, completing induction in 5 to 15 days, such as annual flowers and autumn-blooming perennial herbaceous flowers.

The second is winter-type flowers, requiring a low temperature of 0°C to 10°C, completing induction in 30 to 70 days, such as biennial herbaceous flowers and early-spring-blooming perennial flowers.

The third is semi-winter-type flowers, requiring a temperature of 3°C to 15°C, completing induction in 15 to 20 days.

In flower cultivation, the conditions for floral induction should be met as much as possible to promote the transition of leaf buds to flower buds.

IV. Soil factors

Most flowers prefer acidic or neutral soil and are afraid of saline-alkaline conditions. Even flowers tolerant of alkaline soil can only grow in soil with a pH of around 7.5. If alkalinity is too high, their development and flowering will be affected. Acid-loving flowers, such as camellia, gardenia, Aglaia odorata, and rhododendron, require cultivation soil with a pH below 5.5 to 6. If the pH is around 4, the soil is too acidic, which reduces the effectiveness of phosphorus fertilizer and hinders flower bud differentiation. Flowers that are relatively tolerant of saline-alkaline conditions, such as Chinese rose and geranium, will also have their growth, development, and flowering affected when soil salt content exceeds 0.1% and pH exceeds 7.5. Potting soil with suitable acidity and alkalinity should be selected according to the ecological habits of each flower to promote flowering.

V. Cutting factors

Which type of branch is selected as a cutting is also key to whether it can flower. For vegetatively propagated cuttings, grafting, or air layering, material must be taken from the shoot portions of adult mother trees that have entered the reproductive stage. These branches are reproductive branches, and new seedlings propagated from such cuttings can bloom in the same year. If nutrient-growing branches are used for cuttings, although the new plants may grow robustly, they will not bloom that year because they do not possess reproductive genes and cannot differentiate flower buds.

Woody flowering plants: What are the common woody ornamental flowering plants?

Many people enjoy growing flowers. A small pot of flowers brings endless joy to life, especially ornamental flowering plants. They green the environment and purify the air, and when the flowering season arrives, blossoms open on the branches, lifting one's mood and bringing a greater sense of accomplishment. Today, let's look together at some common woody ornamental flowering plants around us.

Woody ornamental flowering plant - Tree peony

Many people think tree peonies are delicate and difficult to keep, but as long as they are cared for well, they are quite easy to grow. Home-grown tree peonies are usually cultivated in pots to maximize their ornamental value. Tree peonies do not like heat, so after June they must be placed in direct sunlight, while also being protected from dampness; an overly humid environment can cause root rot, which is very detrimental to their survival. As for watering, reduce the frequency in summer and keep it to once every 10 days. In winter, care is relatively easy; just remember to place the tree peony in a sunny spot. Although tree peony flowers are beautiful, their blooming period is too short.

Woody ornamental flowering plant - Gardenia

Gardenia is loved by many for its pale white color and warm, light fragrance. In the hot summer, having such a pure and lovely flower in the living room makes it look refreshing, and gardenia has therefore become a potted flower grown in many households. Gardenia is easy to keep alive in the south because it likes relatively warm environments, and the acidic soil in the south is very favorable for its survival. In the north, more care is needed; if something is not done properly, gardenia may at best suffer from malnutrition and at worst wither.

Woody ornamental flowering plant - Winter jasmine

Winter jasmine has a fresh, light fragrance and blooms in early spring each year, with bright colors that many people love. Winter jasmine likes light and has excellent adaptability. The most suitable environment for growing winter jasmine is warm and humid. Winter jasmine is not delicate at all, has very low soil requirements, and is tolerant of alkalinity. There are many propagation methods for winter jasmine; whether by division, cuttings, or layering, it roots easily. As long as you remember to water it more, there are basically no problems.

Woody ornamental flowering plant - Oleander

Oleander, also called Jiazi peach, rarely bears fruit; it is said to fruit only once every sixty years. Oleander flowers come in pink, red, and peach red, with white being the most common. Oleander has many uses; besides being ornamental, it can also absorb dust and smoke from the air, with excellent absorption capacity, and is therefore called a "green vacuum cleaner." It should be noted that the leaves, bark, roots, and flowers of oleander are all highly toxic. If accidentally ingested, they can cause poisoning.

The above are the common woody ornamental flowering plants around us that the editor has introduced, and I hope they will be helpful to friends who love flowers.
