The Spring Festival is approaching, demand for some foods increases in scale, and prices keep rising again and again. Some media reported that due to a sharp increase in Spring Festival demand, white shrimp prices in the east rose by 2 times, with the price per jin approaching 500 yuan.

The Fisheries Agency pointed out that white shrimp prices in the Taitung area are affected by farming methods, sales patterns and specifications, and prices are on the high side. At present, market white shrimp prices before the Spring Festival have risen slightly by 10%, mainly affected by holiday demand, with a wholesale price of 221 yuan per kg, which is still within a reasonable range.

In response to the increased demand for agricultural products during the Spring Festival, the Council of Agriculture has also strengthened the allocation of supply. It is estimated that in the 5 days before the Spring Festival, the supply of vegetables will increase by 26%, fruit by 24%, and flowers by 3 times. As for livestock, poultry and aquatic products, coordination has already been carried out with relevant groups, and it is estimated that the supply of hogs will increase by 28%, native chickens by 10%, and aquatic products by 10%. It is assessed that there will be no shortage of market supply during the Spring Festival.

White shrimp prices break past 500 yuan? Fisheries Agency: Taitung is a special case

The Fisheries Agency stated that the annual domestic output of white shrimp is about 9,282 metric tons, of which Taitung's annual white shrimp output accounts for only 2%. Locally, mostly live shrimp are sold, and combined with pure seawater aquaculture, prices are relatively high. The Taitung white shrimp mentioned in this report are about 25 shrimp per jin, larger than the common market specification of 50 to 60 shrimp per jin, and belong to a special product that is larger in size and lower in production volume.

The Fisheries Agency pointed out that in the second week before the Spring Festival, the average price of white shrimp at 13 domestic wholesale markets was stable for the 50 to 60 shrimp per jin size, at 221 yuan per kg, a slight rise of 10% compared with 200.8 yuan per kg in the same period of 2018.

Regarding the 10% increase in white shrimp prices, the Fisheries Agency explained that demand in the holiday market is strong, and prices of aquatic products have all risen. Popular aquatic products generally rise by about 10%, and this is a short-term phenomenon. In addition, white shrimp in the west are mostly harvested and frozen for storage in the previous months, and domestic frozen shrimp supply is ample. If frozen shrimp were out of stock, the price increase could start at several times, and the current increase is still within a reasonable range.

To stabilize agricultural product prices during the Spring Festival, the Council of Agriculture: strengthen allocation of supply

The Spring Festival is one of the major holidays in the country. Before the holiday, demand for vegetables, fruit, flowers, poultry and livestock, fish and meat increases greatly. In response to the higher demand for agricultural products during the holiday and to stabilize prices before the Spring Festival, the Council of Agriculture has taken stock of holiday agricultural products in advance and strengthened allocation measures.

Kang Chiang-liang, director of the statistics office of the Council of Agriculture, said that by referring to market supply and demand conditions in previous years and supply prices, market supply of products has been strengthened. Usually, due to processing demand, hog market trading volume begins to rise three weeks before the Spring Festival, while most others reach a peak in trading volume one week before the Spring Festival.

The Council of Agriculture took stock of demand for agricultural products during the Spring Festival. Supply of vegetables, fruit and flowers is ample, and allocation will be strengthened depending on market conditions. It is estimated that in the 5 days before the holiday, the supply of vegetables and fruit will increase by 20% to 30%; the supply of seasonal flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, anthuriums, gladioli, bromeliads and silver willow is estimated to increase by 3 times.

In addition, regarding livestock, poultry and aquatic products, Kang Chiang-liang pointed out that production and marketing meetings have been held with relevant groups to coordinate supply, and the estimated supply of hogs and aquatic products will increase by 28% compared with ordinary days. It is assessed that Spring Festival supply will be sufficient.

Chen Tien-shou, deputy chairman of the Council of Agriculture, added that last year's Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation incident, due to climate problems plus consecutive market closures, led to large vegetable and fruit volumes and falling prices. This year, communication has already been carried out with the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation, and the market will open on the sixth day of the lunar new year. The sixth, seventh and eighth days of the lunar new year will all be trading days, and the market will close only on the ninth day, so consecutive market closures will not occur.
