What are the prevention methods for Cymbidium mosaic virus disease?
Prevention of Cymbidium mosaic virus disease
① Do not blindly pursue so-called superior varieties, do not be tempted by bargains and buy virus-infected orchids, do not buy seedlings from areas where virus-infected orchids are widespread, and do not buy seedlings that have been packed or stored together with virus-infected orchids. This is the most fundamental and also the most effective preventive measure.
② All seedlings introduced from outside must be soaked for 2 hours in a solution of Bingdubike at 500-700 times dilution plus edible rice vinegar at 250 times dilution for disinfection. After potting, spray the leaf surfaces and undersides once a week with the diluted Bingdubike solution, and water the roots with this solution once every 10-15 days, for more than 10 consecutive times each. After that, spray once each season with medical aspirin at 1000 times dilution. In this way, the multiplication and spread of the virus can be effectively suppressed, so that those not yet showing symptoms of viral disease will not develop them later, and those already showing symptoms will spread less or not at all afterward.
③ Do not excessively manage for high temperature and high humidity just to force a high propagation rate and high growth rate. Orchid plant sheds and rooms must be well ventilated with plenty of natural air. Various fertilizers should be supplied according to need; do not fertilize blindly, lest the result be the opposite of what is intended.
④ Tools and hands that have come into contact with diseased plants can be disinfected by soaking in 2% formalin for 60 minutes. Blade edges can be sterilized by burning with a lighter flame to prevent transmission. (Xu Dongsheng)
