Key Technical Points and Methods of Orchid Fertilization Explained
Orchid Fertilization Techniques
OrchidsFor fertilization, I commonly use compound fertilizer and sheng gu fen (raw bran powder).
Sheng gu fen fertilizer should be applied frequently and thinly. One tablespoon per pot, applied once every twenty to thirty days. Compound fertilizer: twenty to thirty granules per pot, applied evenly, do not apply near the orchid crown. Applying it at the orchid crown easily causes fertilizer burn and "sitting upright" (stunted growth). I have always used liquid fertilizer. The fertilizer applied in the first season is sheng gu fermented in urine. Mix sheng gu fen with 50% urine water (50% urine plus 50% water), and ferment for two to three months. During fermentation, add some bone meal, or light fish meal, or buy some dead fish from the market and mix them in. Entering autumn, I add rice water; rice water is the settled slurry from water used to wash rice, not too thin.
OrchidsFertilization mainly depends on the condition of the orchids. Observing leaf color to fertilize is very important. If the leaf color is light green with a yellowish waxy tone, the orchids are strong, the orchid shed gets enough sunlight and sufficient air, then apply a little more frequently. On the contrary, if the orchid shed is more shaded and the orchid plants are weak, then apply a little less.
After sheng fu (raw bran) and human urine have fermented to a paste-like concentration, when applying, dilute with a ratio of 1:10 to 1:11. After fertilizing, water once two hours later. Within six hours it has already been absorbed by the roots, and the general fertilizer effect lasts about 8 days. (Han Zhicheng)
