Southern blight is highly destructive, growers must be on high alert

Beware of southern blight

On May 30 it rained here all day long, and when I got up the next morning and carefully checked every pot oforchids(this is my daily habit), I suddenly noticed that the pseudobulbs of a wild-collected Autumn Lotus were covered in white fuzz. My first reaction was to cry out "bad news": "southern blight." I immediately knocked it out of the pot to deal with it. The three new shoots had already rotted with mold, so I cut off the new shoots with a knife, washed them clean with water, soaked them in 500x agricultural streptomycin for 15 minutes, took them out and let them dry, discarded the original potting medium, switched to another pot, then mixed 500x quintozene into the xiantu soil, repotted the orchid seedlings, and afterward watered them with 500x jinggangmycin. Now five days have passed and it is basically under control with no problems. Thinking about it, it is really terrifying. The spread of southern blight is truly astonishingly fast; in just one or two days it can wipe out an entire pot of plants. Therefore I remind all orchid friends to pay attention: during the moldy rainy season, orchid pots must not be too wet, the potting medium must not be too acidic, ventilation is key, and give appropriate light. Use quicklime to disinfect the entire orchid room once. (Lan Huiming)
