The impact of the growing environment and climate on Cymbidium faberi

In ancient times, those who cultivated orchids and grew Cymbidium faberi were mostly men of letters and nobles from prominent families. They all had halls and courtyards with very goodorchid growingenvironments, unlike us today who mostly grow orchids on balconies or rooftopsgrowing orchids. The growing environment has undergone a fundamental change. Last year's weather was even a once-in-a-century occurrence: no continuous spring rain, no rain during the plum rain season, and sustained high temperatures in summer. In such an environment and climate,Cymbidium faberipseudobulbs planted deep in the soil would feel as uncomfortable as wearing a scarf in summer. Local orchid enthusiasts have also learned the hard way about deep planting ofCymbidium faberi. In this city alone, many unique specimens of wild-collectedCymbidium faberiworth nearly 1 million yuan in total died from stem rot. Of course, there were other causes of death such as growing medium, water and fertilizer, and many other factors, but according to my investigation and understanding, the vast majority that died were Cymbidium faberi. This cannot but arouse our vigilance. At the same time, as is well known, the pseudobulb is the reservoir of nutrients and water fororchids, and it plays an important role as a connecting link. The decomposition of the soil, the absorption by the roots, and through photosynthesis, various organic substances are processed and manufactured, transported to the pseudobulb for storage, and then continuously supplied to the growth of new roots and new shoots. And this complex process of processing, manufacturing, and supplying all depends on light as the driving force, so based on this principle, Cymbidium faberi also cannot be planted deep. The pseudobulb should be slightly exposed on the surface to ensure sufficient light to activate this original driving force. Excerpted from "OrchidTreasury" Author: Ge Xinxing, Taizhou, Zhejiang
