Xu Dongsheng: How to treat viral disease

Although the virus disease is judged to be an incurable orchid disease, this is not absolute. In fact, orchidorchidhorticulturists and growers everywhere have made certain progress in treating virus-diseased orchids. The author also conducted a treatment experiment on a cluster of orchid seedlings suffering from viral disease. After 3 years, the old plants had withered and died, while the 3 new plants that sprouted showed no signs of viral disease. Although no tissue section testing was done, so a cure cannot be confirmed with certainty, recent surface control can be said to have been successful. The treatment method was:

(1) Grow strong plants: Create suitable ecological conditions to cultivate infected orchid plants, and do not place them in a glass greenhouse for growing. Adjust light, temperature and humidity according to orchid habits, provide more natural ventilation, and appropriately supply fertilizer and spray pesticide, so as to grow strong plants and improve resistance.

(2) Apply medication to suppress and eliminate the virus: Medication should be applied both by watering and by spraying, spraying to treat the aboveground part and watering with medication to treat the underground part, carrying out all-round treatment. Spray every 7 days, water with medication every 10-15 days, and after 10-15 consecutive times, change to once every half month or once a month, persisting for more than 1 year to consolidate the therapeutic effect. The medicaments selected for treatment are: 1. For finished pesticides, use 500 times dilution of Bingdu Bikè as the markedly effective medicine, add edible rice vinegar with extremely strong penetrating function at 250 times dilution, to lead the medicine directly to the diseased part and enhance drug efficacy. Also take nutrients rich in amino acids and various other components to strengthen the body, enhancing the orchid plant's ability to eliminate pathogens. 2. Apply heat-clearing and detoxifying Chinese medicines with antiviral function. Such as Banlangen (Isatis root), Daqingye (Isatis leaf), Jinyinhua (honeysuckle), Guanzhong (Dryopteris crassirhizoma), Huanglao, Beizi, Yijianxi, Qiyeyizhihua (Paris polyphylla), Banbianlian (Lobelia chinensis), Banzhilian (Scutellaria barbata) and Zihuadiding (Viola philippica), etc., are all preferred medicinal materials. You may choose three or five flavors in any combination to form a prescription, and use them alternately every month. First use the infusion, then the decoction, then spread the medicinal residue. The medicinal liquid is preferably 10-100 times dilution. 3. Spray once each season with the antipyretic-analgesic aspirin at 1000 times dilution, to induce the plant body to produce resistance protein, so as to suppress or kill the virus. Doing so has considerable synergistic effect.

(3) Strengthen the body and eliminate pathogens: Diseased orchid plants consume too much and are unable to transport medicaments themselves to eliminate pathogens, so strengthening the body is indispensable. The main measures to strengthen the body are: 1. Gradually increase the amount of light; 2. Provide more natural ventilation and bathe in more dew; 3. Fertilize normally, and water once every half year with compound trace element fertilizer or plant vigor essence, and spray once every week or half month with medium-concentration foliar fertilizer, such as Zhuwu Dongli 2003, Gaolida, Gaole, Aishi brand foliar fertilizer, etc. If unremitting efforts can be made according to the above methods, perhaps a recent curative effect may be obtained, and at the very least an effect of controlling its spread will be obtained.
