Can Athlete's Foot Cream (Miconazole) Be Used to Treat Southern Blight? Detailed Usage Instructions
Using Miconazole Cream to Treat Southern Blight
The author once bought a clump of Xia Hui orchid. This orchid was really too weak in growth, and fearing it might carry pathogens, I rinsed it and soaked it in potassium permanganate for half an hour. After drying it in the shade for two days, I planted it in top-grade granular soil. Unexpectedly, half a month later, white mycelium appeared on the surface of the pot. Upon turning out the pot to inspect, there was a lot of white mycelium below the pseudobulbs, the base leaves of the small seedlings had rotted, and 1 cm above the broken root ends had also rotted away. After cleaning it again, I usedorchidJunchongjing to soak it for 2 hours; after air-drying, I cut off 0.5 cm from the broken roots, dipped them in gentian violet, applied Miconazole to the rotted areas on the pseudobulbs and leaves, and the next day planted it in boiled coarse river sand. After a week, white mycelium still emerged, but in much smaller amounts than before. I then usedorchidJunchongjing as a drench, and the next day applied a dissolved solution of Miconazole as a drench. After a week, I alternated the drenches 3 more times. Only then was this stubborn disease, southern blight, truly brought under control, and this Xia Hui orchid's seed stock was preserved, with no pathogens found to this day. (Zhejiang, Zhou Weiqi)
