How to prevent fertilizer burn in orchids? These methods you need to master
Prevention of fertilizer burn in orchids
OrchidsFor normal growth, nutrients must be continuously absorbed from the growing medium or from the environment outside the roots. When the nutrient elements in the growing medium are continuously absorbed, the nutrients will gradually become insufficient, and they must be supplemented to maintain the nutrient content in the growing medium. This is especially true when using non-soil growing media, where there is an even greater need to continuously supplement the nutrient elements in the growing medium. Supplementing nutrient elements is mainly achieved through fertilizing. However, when too much fertilizer is applied, it can cause great harm toorchids, and weak plants or old plants are especially more susceptible to damage.
To prevent fertilizer burn, an effective method is to use a conservative fertilizing approach: dilute various commercially available fertilizers by an additional 0.5 to 1 times beyond the concentration required on the label before use. For any newly used fertilizer, whether inorganic fertilizer or homemade organic fertilizer, before using it on a large scale, a preliminary adaptability test must be carried out (generally using low-grade flowers of the same type for the experiment). Observe for about 2 weeks; if no problems appear, it can then be used on a large scale. During rainy weather or high-temperature and high-humidity weather, it is not suitable to fertilizeorchids, because the air humidity is high, water is difficult to evaporate, and the roots are not likely to absorb nutrients. It is best to fertilize orchids on a sunny morning (so that photosynthesis can function). About 5 to 6 hours after fertilizing, water once with clean water to do a good job of washing away the fertilizer.
Once orchids suffer from fertilizer burn, the main signs are damage to the root system, difficulty absorbing water, and wilting. After this situation appears, a relatively feasible remedy is: immediately take the orchid out of the pot, soak the roots in clean water for 1 to 2 hours, let them dry, replace with new growing medium, replant the orchid, and then soak the whole orchid plant together with the pot in running clean water for 5 to 6 hours, with the water level preferably covering the pot surface. In this way, a considerable portion of the nutrients in the orchid plant can be washed away, allowing it to resume growth. If it is a high-temperature season and not suitable to repot, the original pot can be placed in running clean water and soaked for 10 hours.
In addition, when nitrogen fertilizer is used too much, orchids will grow excessively. This can be suppressed by restricting water to inhibit absorption, and by improving light conditions to increase photosynthetic products and speed up the accumulation of dry matter. (Xinyuanxuan)
