How to control light and temperature for home-grown orchids
Light and temperature for home-grown orchids
OrchidsIn winter and spring they should receive full light, while in summer and autumn they should be shaded by more than half. After summer begins, moveorchidsto a place with sky light but no direct sunlight, such as a north-facing balcony of a building or under the eaves of a single-storey house. If such conditions are not available, from early May to late September, use a reed curtain or bamboo curtain to block direct sunlight; spread the curtain when strong light comes, and roll it up after the strong light has passed.CultivationFor larger quantities, shade netting can be used, and the shading rate should be no less than 6O%.
OrchidsThe suitable temperature is 25-28 degrees in summer and autumn, and 3-7 degrees in winter and early spring. During the dormant period, the daytime room temperature should not be higher than 16°C, and the nighttime room temperature should not be higher than 10°C. During periods outside the suitable temperature range, in midsummer place bricks under the pots, spread sand, spray the orchid plants, and sprinkle water on the ground to lower the temperature and raise air humidity so they can pass the summer safely. In severe winter, place them indoors or in a double-layer plastic shed, and they generally will not freeze. When a cold wave arrives and wind and snow lower the temperature, measures must be taken to increase warmth, otherwise they will suffer cold damage.
