What are the effective control methods for scale insects?
Control of scale insects
During the plum rain season, three types of scale insects cause serious damage: armored scales, striped mealybugs, and orchid scales.
Control methods:Cymbidium goeringiiFor spring orchids, apply control from May to September after flowering; for summer orchids, apply control in May before flowering.
For home cultivation, choose any one of the following:
1. Use absorbent cotton or gauze dipped in a 1:5 solution of crushed scallion or garlic, or a 1:200 washing powder solution, or 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 100 times dilution, gently wipe the affected areas, and disturb the scale insects, once every five days, for 3-4 consecutive times.
2. Use a palm brush or a soft toothbrush to gently brush them off longitudinally along the leaf veins (ribs), or use a small bamboo needle to pick off the insect bodies.
3. Use absorbent cotton or gauze dipped in 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate at 80 times dilution and place it on the potting soil, 8-10 cm away from the orchid plant, then seal it with plastic film for fumigation for half an hour to one hour; the effect is best.
In addition, at the end of October, removepests and diseasesyellowed leaves and rotted roots or replace the topsoil, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and protect and utilize natural enemies. (Deng Shaokang)
