There is a knack to using meat-based fertilizers; those with a high fat content should be used with caution
Use fatty meat-based fertilizers with caution
I stored fish and poultry innards and trimmings in a wine jar, sealed and fermented them for over a year, then began testing at a 1:35 dilution, and found that high-gradeCymbidium sinenseespecially leaf-variegated ones, are extremely sensitive. For example, in varieties such as Dashimen, Daidaifu and Yusong, brown patches appear on the leaves of the center-translucent and center-striped types, mostly along leaf margins and petioles, resembling brown rot, and they gradually shrivel. On repotting and inspection, the roots had already become diseased. In flower-type orchids such as Fugui, Datun Qilin, Yu Shizi and Taoji, brown patches also appear on the leaves, but the leaves do not scorch, the color does not fade, the pattern resembles red-line variegation, and growth is unaffected; moreover, FujianCymbidium ensifolium, and Jiangsu-Zhejiang cymbidiums and huilan seemed to be unaffected. On closer observation, different varieties differ in their tolerance of meat-based fertilizer; marginal-variegatedCymbidium sinenseshowed no abnormal symptoms, and like the flower-type orchids had brown patches. At the same time, it is also related to plant vigor: weak plants and diseased plants suffer more severely. (Laotie)
