The clever uses of oyster mushroom spent substrate

The oyster mushrooms sold in farmers' markets in southern Jiangsu are all grown by mixing oyster mushroom spawn into cottonseed hulls, with various nutrients added to the hulls, forming the substrate into pillow shapes to cultivate oyster mushrooms, which are then picked and sold at market. As winter passes and spring arrives, once the oyster mushrooms have all been picked, the substrate becomes waste. It can generally be found in the suburbs, or you can buy two blocks from a professional oyster mushroom grower for less than 10 yuan. Spray a little water on them each day, and the continuously growing oyster mushrooms can be picked for eating, fresh and delicious. After spring begins, when the oyster mushrooms no longer grow, break the substrate apart by hand and sun-dry it for a few days, then add an equal volume of mountain soil (orchidsoil), and it becomesorchidpotting medium. This soil is breathable and moisture-retaining, rich in nutrients, will not compact with long-term use, and requires no fertilizing. In winter it also has a warming effect. The orchid seedlings grown in it thrive, and the sprouting rate is noticeably higher than with other substrates. Orchid enthusiasts who have the conditions may want to give it a try. (Zhao Jun)
