Soft rot and new methods of prevention and control
Soft rotThe pathogen of the disease is a bacterial pathogen.Soft rotThe pathogen of the disease usually enters and infects through the natural openings of the orchid plant (stomata) or wounds caused by mechanical friction and injury.Soft rotAfter the pathogen of the disease invades the tissues of the orchid plant, it quickly causes a water-soaked appearance, with the epidermis rupturing and drooping, and soft rot, accompanied by an unpleasant odor. When an orchid plant is infected with soft rot, mucus is present on the lesions.CultivationIf the manager touches the fluid from the lesions with their hands, they will feel a sticky sensation. This is where bacterial and fungal infections differ.
After the soft rot pathogen infects an orchid plant, the infection spreads quickly in the softer tissues.CultivationWhen the manager discovers the initial symptoms of infection, appropriate chemicals should be applied immediately for treatment; otherwise, the infected parts will quickly soften, rot, and die. On older, more mature orchid tissues, the disease progresses slowly, but in severe cases the entire orchid plant rots and dies.
Prevention and control methods
(1) The pathogen mainly spreads and infects through water, so diseased orchid plants should be isolated and immediately taken out of the orchid room.
(2) Avoid mechanical injury, so that the pathogen does not have the opportunity to enter through wounds and attack the orchid plant.
(3) During the rainy season, covering equipment should be provided to prevent rainwater from splashing onto the orchid plants, and on clear days chemicals should be applied immediately for prevention and control.
(4) Apply chemicals regularly for prevention.
(5) For diseased plants, you may try:
(A) 69% Duobao streptomycin wettable powder at 1,000 times;
(b) 30% Pukelamanganese soluble powder at 1,000 times.
(6) In winter, when temperatures are low and general bacterial fungicides are less effective, you may try a chemical agent in steel-agent form, Huojue Kuaidenin at 1,000 times, to achieve prevention and control. When applying heavy-metal-type chemical agents, no other chemical fertilizers or organic fertilizers may remain on the orchid leaves before or after application, and fertilizers must not be mixed at the same time, especially seaweed extract types, to avoid phytotoxicity. For example, copper-based pesticides easily cause phytotoxicity during high-temperature periods. Mixing copper-based pesticides with seaweed extract also often causes phytotoxicity.
(7) In summer and during the rainy season, apply Kuaidenin at 1,200 times once every two to four weeks; in winter, apply once every one to three months. Adding spreader at 1,500 times can increase the fungicidal effect.
(8) Although the above chemicals have a killing effect on bacterial pathogens, bacterial pathogens easily develop resistance to the above chemicals.CultivationWhen the manager carries out disease prevention and control in ordinary times, different pesticides need to be used in rotation, so that the chemicals do not fail to kill the pathogen due to resistance and cause harm to the growth of the orchid plants.
