Principles of watering

Generallyorchidsare more drought-tolerant than ordinary herbaceous flowers. They will not wither immediately without water for 3-5 days, but if the pseudobulbs are found to be shriveled and shrunken from lack of water, the orchid plant has already been seriously damaged and its growth affected. Conversely, overwatering affects root respiration, turns the growing medium acidic, and easily causes root rot. In particular, most beginners fail because they water too frequently. The number of waterings and the amount of water needed for variousorchidsare difficult to set by a unified standard; they must be determined according to the growth condition of the orchid plant and changes in the environment. For example, theorchidvariety, the size of the orchid plant, its growth condition, the intensity of light, the level of temperature, seasonal changes, ventilation conditions, the coarseness of the growing medium, the material and size of the pot, and so on - countless complex factors must all be taken into consideration before deciding on watering. The above are the watering principles commonly applicable to most orchids. These situations require more watering: 1. Epiphytic orchids (rock-dwelling orchids) or those planted with tree fern boards (tree fern pillars). 2. Types with many, wide, thin leaves. 3. When growth is vigorous and flower buds have already emerged. 4. When new shoots of mature plants begin to grow. 5. When exposed to strong light from summer to mid-autumn. 6. During high temperatures from summer to mid-autumn. 7. When temperatures rise sharply in spring and autumn. 8. On sunny days with strong sun or during drought. 9. When air humidity is too low. 10. When air moves rapidly with strong ventilation. 11. When using coarse growing medium. 12. When using new growing medium. 13. When planting in unglazed clay pots. 14. When planting in small flower pots. 15. When the growing medium is already very dry and it is time to water. These situations require less watering: 1. Terrestrial orchids when using growing medium with strong water retention. 2. Types with many, thick, fleshy leaves. 3. During the dormant period when growth has stopped or the flower bud differentiation stage. 4. When new shoots of mature plants have grown into pseudobulbs. 5. When exposed to weak light from winter to early spring. 6. During low temperatures from winter to early spring. 7. When temperatures are on the low side in spring and autumn. 8. On cloudy days, rainy days, or during the plum rain season. 9. When air humidity is too high. 10. When air movement is slow and ventilation is poor. 11. When using fine, crumbly growing medium that easily absorbs water. 12. When using old, decayed growing medium. 13. When planting in plastic pots or glazed ceramic pots. 14. When planting in large flower pots. 15. When just transplanted, pruned, or treated with pesticide.
